Title: The Maths Apprentice

1
The Maths Apprentice
  • Twizzle the Giraffe

2
Scenario
  • Telephone call from a
  • zoo in Bangladesh
  • Hello. Our zoo has
  • been flooded and our
  • youngest giraffe needs a
  • new home. So she needs
  • to be transported
  • urgently to the Airport.
  • Please HELP!

3
Our challenge
  • We had to produce a crate for Twizzle.
  • It has to be-
  • As cheap as possible
  • Comfortable for Twizzle
  • The correct height, shape and width.

4
How we tackled the challenge
  • Firstly, we all focused on thinking of a design.
  • Then we choose two final designs that we thought
    would be the best.
  • Then we all worked out together the dimensions
    and costs for each.

5
Our first design
Costs Wood 77.00 Straw 2.50 Netting
3.90 Rubber matting 107.50 Travelling costs
1165.00 TOTAL 1360.63
Height 4.6m
Width 1.3m
Length 4.3m
6
Second design
Height 4.8m
Width 1.5m
Length 4m
7
Why we chose which?
  • 1st design Too expensive
  • Dont really need extra space
  • 2nd design Its cheaper (uses less materials)
  • Still comfortable for Twizzle

8
About our design
Netting (for oxygen)
Wood
Rubber matting
Metal gridding
9
Costs
Patrick started costing the wood for the crate by
finding out the square metre area for each side
and then adding it together. For example For
the front piece of the crate 4m2m6mx 4.8
divided by 2 8.8m2 Then I added all of these
results together and got 33.2m2 This cost 59.50
The overall cost of the crate is 164.65
  • (Patrick will explain more)

10
  • Our crate is designed so that it will give
  • enough room for Twizzle the giraffe to move
  • around and lay down.
  • It is also quite cheap to make and transport.
  • It has enough oxygen (ventilation) for
  • Twizzle.
  • It also has rubber matting on the insides of the
crate so that it will be comfortable and safe for
    Twizzle.

11
  • Our design is relatively cheap but still gives
Twizzle a nice crate for her journey.
  • We think our design is the most efficient shape
and will be the most suitable crate for Twizzle.
