Future Clinical Utility For VXA

• Cross Sectional Moments of Inertia (CSMI)
• - Measured across the femoral neck
• - Estimates mechanical stiffness of the bone.
• Neck Shaft Angle
• - Angle between the femoral shaft and the neck.
• - Steepness shown to correlate with fracture
  risk
• Cortical Thickness
• - Measures the thickness of cortical bone.
• - Thinning shown to correlate with fracture risk
• Buckling Ratio
• - Likelihood that the bone will break under
  compression.

Future Clinical Utility For VXA

• Volumetric BMD (vBMD)
• - Calculates gm/cm3
• - Previously vBMD only available from
  Quantitative Computed Tomography.
• Hip Axis Length (HAL)
• - Typically HAL from DXA measured from the
  pelvic rim to the greater Troch.
• - DXA HAL not a true representation.
• - 3D allows HAL measured from the femoral head
  to the greater trochanter.
• - HAL measurements shown to be independent
  predictor of hip fracture risk.
• Measurement Tools
• A suite of measurement tools should be developed
  for use with 3D DXA. This allows researchers to
  use Hologic C-arm DXA devices for cutting edge
  research.
