Introduction

• Grace Chavula operates the malaria program work
  for Ekwendeni Hospital one of three hospitals
  under the proprietorship of the Synod of
  Livingstonia, one of three Synods in the Church
  of Central Africa, Presbyterian in Malawi
• You are presenting the Christian Women's
  NetWorkers Program, a congregational-based
  malaria prevention program, since you were
  involved in the development of the two pilot
  congregational-based programs in ?1999/?2000 and
  will be a trainer for malaria prevention
  programs.

program will operate as follows

• Women from the implementation sites are chosen by
  their communities to educate their communities
  about malaria and use of n-Ns, to sell nets, and
  to implement a re-treatment plan.
• The women will be trained for one on malaria in
  pregnancy and ITNs.
• Plans for this NetWorkers program will be
  announced through the churches and among their
  neighbors
• Networkers will attend ANC in their areas, either
  government or non-government and will provide
  malaria education and sell the nets at subsidized
  prices to women at the clinics
• The Networkers will record on the women's
  antenatal card that they received a net and
  record that a subsidized net was sold in the
  networker's record book.
• During non-clinic days the networkers will also
  provide malaria education, encourage antenatal
  attendence, and encourage the women to ask the
  health care providers for their doses of sP .

Baseline, mid-project, and final Survey

• Using technical expertise from CDC, SOL and SON
  experiences, and experiences from NGOs (CPAR,PsI)
  a survey will be written and conducted in both
  project areas at baseline, mid-project, and final
  project
• Also using the same resources, tools for
  monitoring will be developed

Anticipated problems

• Increasing the dosing of SP that women receive
  either due to lack of SP, women not returning for
  antenatal clinic, poor record keeping, or
  possibly health care workers skill in determining
  the appropriate time to give SP .
• Increasing the number of iron doses received.
• Acceptance of redipping the nets. Suggestions to
  improve redipping are to offer simple incentives
  such as "sweets for the sweet", bar of soap, etc
• Financial and material accountability. (note An
  Accounts Assistant will be hired to handle funds
  and report on them monthly and quarterly, and
  will work closely with the Central Site
  Coordinator. )
• Will non-subsidized nets be sold on credit?
  Suggestions give a lower price for someone who
  pays at once and higher price for someone who
  pays in instalments
• Communication and synchronal programming between
  the two Synods
