AIM
  • To provide a brief insight into the role of a
    Macmillan Trainee Breast Care Nurse.
  • Discuss the benefits of a role development
    programme.
  • Explore some of my experiences during the initial
    transitional period.
  • Discuss the core modules and how these have
    interlinked theory with practice to improve care
    for patients with breast cancer.

MACMILLAN TRAINEE BREAST CARE NURSE
  • Secondment post for 1 year to develop as a
    Macmillan Breast Care Nurse.
  • Supernumerary status Providing an opportunity
    to develop awareness of the functioning
    components of other members of the team.
  • Completion of four core modules of the Role
    Development Programme.

THE PROGRAMME ENABLES THE TRAINEE TO
  • To develop in a supportive environment.
  • Develop an understanding of the components of a
    specialist practitioner and develop further
    skills in this area.
  • To make the transition from generalist to
    specialist practitioner within a structured
    supportive framework.

    meetings.

    approach in clinical decision making.
  • Examined how decisions relating to patient
    treatment are made.
  • Explored the roles of the Multidisciplinary team.

QUALITY IN PRACTICE
  • Examined and critically reviewed the Clinical
    Standards used by the Breast Care Nurses.
  • Re-defined the Breast Care Standards - changing
    the format in line with the Quality Assurance
    Teams structure, for audit processes.
  • Audited the reviewed standards used by the breast
    care service.
  • Completed written report and PowerPoint
    presentation of findings.
  • Developed action plan from findings.

TEACHING, LEARNING AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
  • Presently developing a teaching plan to
    facilitate the Breast Care Nurses during
    counselling sessions with ladies undergoing
    breast reconstructive surgery.
  • Developing a patient centred booklet A Womans
    Guide to Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction
    which will include with consent, coloured
    photographs of ladies who have had a mastectomy
    with or without reconstructive surgery.
