Life on board
  • The ships were made out of wood. The sails has
    three masts and canvas sails. Ships carried some
    cannons to fight pirates.
  • On long voyages, the drinking water turned green
    and food went rotten. Sailors often died of poor
    diet and food poisoning.
  • Sailors had to sleep on the deck, wherever they
    could find a space. There were no fires and it
    was really cold at night.
  • The ship had rats and mice. The food storage
    room was the dirtiest place on the ship. The
    food would be dirty and full of worms.

  • On board the ship, there were many jobs to do
  • Mop the deck
  • Clean the kitchen
  • Check the food because of mice and rats
  • Look after the captain
  • Change the direction of sails

  • They did not have fridges so they had to take
    food from home. They didnt know when they would
    find land to find fresh food.

Drakes treasures
  • The Queen was astounded by the tremendous
    quantity of silver, gold and jewels Drake had
    taken from the Spanish. Because she had
    personally invested 1000 crowns in the venture.
    She received 471,000 crowns in return. This was
    enough money to pay off England's foreign debt
    as well cover future expenses of the country for
    several years.

Captain Drake
  • Drake was an accomplished explorer and sea
    captain who served Elizabeth loyally and helped
    England become a major sea power. Queen Elizabeth
    gave him a knighthood on his return to England.

  • In 1577 Drake went with five ships to trade to go
    to the Nile of Africa. They really went in the
    Pacific Ocean by the Strait of Magellan by
    mistake

Drakes information
  • Queen Elizabeth allowed Drake to keep 10.000
    crowns with which he bought the large estate
    called Buckland Abbey north of Plymouth. Buckland
    Abbey is now a museum of the British National
    trust and holds many of Drakes possessions.

  • He stole King Philip II ship called San Felipe.
    It held gold, china, spices, jewels and silks.
    She was the richest prize ever taken.
