Title: The LS120

1
The LS-120

  • Imations current LS-120 drive is known as the
    SuperDisk.

2
Characteristics
  • The ls-120 supports very high density diskettes.
It can have 2,490 tracks, as apposed to the 135
tracks of the conventional 3.5 diskettes. Also
the LS-120 has120 MB of storage capacity, but the
3.5 only has 1.44 MB of storage capacity.
  • The LS-120 is equivalent to about 83 floppy
    disks. (83disks x 1.44MB 119.52MB.) Unlike the
zip drives, the SuperDisk is fully compatible, so
    floppy disks are still usable.
  • The LS-120 uses an ATAPI IDE interface, so it can
be installed alongside existing hard drives. It
    can replace the floppy drive.

3
Preparing to Install
  • The LS drives minimum requirements are
486DX2/66MHz processor, 8MB of RAM, and 5MB of
free hard drive space. Some small systems do not
have power connectors, in this case you may use a
Y-splitter cable to add another connector. If you
are replacing a Floppy just use the same power
    connectors.
  • If you are planning to us the LS-120 as a
bootable drive, youll need to check BIOS for
compatibility. If BIOS does not support it then
you must upgrade the BIOS before installing.

4
Basic Installation Process
  • Prepare the System. Turn off power, remove
    screws.
  • Set Jumpers. It will most likely be a slave
device to an existing master device. Mount the
LS-120 and connect power and signal cables.
  • You will need to update the CMOS settings if you
decide to use the LS-120 as a bootable drive.
With the floppy removed and the LS-120 set as a
bootable drive, it will become the new A drive.
At this point save system CMOS and restart
    computer.

5
Some things to consider
  • Some BIOS versions do not support the LS-120, the
    ones that do are..
  • Award BIOS version 4.51PG or later
  • AMI BIOS version 6.26.02 or later
  • Phoenix BIOS version 6.0 or later
  • Older versions of Windows support the drive as a
    removable and nonbootable disk.
  • Many major system houses such as Packard Bell and
Compaq do not support the LS-120 because they
have their on OEM versions that must be
    installed.
