So you wanted to know more about Knights in
battle Knights fought on horseback using
swords, lances (long poles with blade at the
end), axes and vicious weapons called morning
stars. Each knight had their own symbol, called
a coat of arms, to show from which family they
belong to. Knights were from rich and noble
families. They were heavily protected. They had
shields, Chain mail, a metal helmet and
protection on their legs.

about Foot soldiers Foot soldiers were normal
soldiers from poorer families. They needed money

and experienced as knights. But not all foot
soldiers were from poor families. Some foot
soldiers were dismounted knights who fought on
foot, not on horse.

6 So you wanted to wanted to know more about How
do you become a knight Becoming a knight Only
boys from noble families could become knights.
First, a boy worked as a page in a castle,
learning how to ride and fight. Then, he became a
squire and looked after a knight. When the squire
had proved that he was a brave warrior, he was
knighted by a king or a noble.

7You wanted to know more about Defending a
castle A castle could be attacked by foreign
invaders or by an enemy lord. Castles were
designed to be extremely strong and easy to
defend. Soldiers defending a castle used
different weapons like throwing rocks from the
walls and shooting flaming arrows or boiling tar.

castle The soldiers which were attacking had
rams, Catapults and Trebuchets and siege towers
and other ways of attaching a castle. Siege
towers were pushed to the wall and then the
