Title: February 2006
1 February 2006 Using Secure Shell to transfer
files(Getting a file from off-campus onto
Viking) Donna Smith
2The file transfer system is called Secure Shell.
It is a small application (program) that you
need to install on your remote computer.
You can download Secure Shell from the Links
page on our class web pages.
3The processes of downloading and installation are
not covered in this presentation. Please ask
computer lab staff or your instructor if you need
help with these.
4(No Transcript)
5Youll see something like this
(These are files on Donnas home computer. Your
list will look different.)
Click on Quick Connect
6If this error message pops up, just click okay,
and it will disappear.
(I always get this message at UH, but I dont get
it at home Its unexplained but doesnt
interfere. Consider it meaningless.)
7This box appears next. The host name is
viking.coe.uh.edu The user name is what you log
into viking as.
For example, when Donna logs in, mine will look
like this
The same for everyone
Unique for everyone
8Click Connect
Next, this box may appear, probably only for the
1st time you do this. Click Yes and it will go
away.
9Now it wants you to type your Viking password
here.
After you type your password, click OK.
10Now the remote computer (Viking) shows up!
And there is where your Xdrive lives!
So you double-click on the HOME folder, and
11Now you can SEE into your Xdrive. This is a
picture of Donnas.
You can put files on this level, but if you want
them to be visible on the World Wide Web, they
have to be inside your homepage folder
Here is Donnas homepage folder.Double-click and
you can see
12Now all the contents of the homepage are
visible. Donnas homepage is organized with
folders. The individual files are inside the
folders.
13Clicking this folder will show the files that are
organized inside it.
14Reality check! You are looking at a picture of
your file names on Viking, but this is NOT the
same kind of connection as when you are working
IN the CITE lab!
- Secure Shell can
- Upload (beam me up, Scotty) or
- Download (beam me down, Scotty)
If you double-click a file in this window, and
it opens, it has downloaded to your computer, and
changes will not be saved on Viking. You have to
work on the file on your computer, save changes
there, and then upload them back to Viking.
15Okay, so Secure Shell only lets you go get and
place files on Viking.
Whats an easy way to do this? This is what Donna
doesOpen a window for your local files next to
the Secure Shell window.
16To move a file TO Viking
Locate the local file you want to upload to
Viking.
Click and drag that file over to the Secure
Shell window and drop it into the appropriate
folder.
That will upload the file, and it will appear in
the destination window.
17To move a file FROM Viking to your home computer
Locate the remote file you want to download
from Viking.
Click and drag that file from the Secure Shell
window and drop it into the appropriate folder
on your home computer.
That will download the file, and it will appear
in the destination window.
18Then you disconnect (File/Disconnect) from Secure
Shell and close the application. It cant do
anything for you except move the files back and
forth. So you may do your work on your home
computer, but you can get files from Viking, work
on them and save them on your home computer, and
then put the newer versions back on Viking.
