  10, 2006, and lasted until February 26, 2006. It
  is the second time that Italy has hosted the
  Olympic Winter Games.

Ancient Olympic Games in Greece

• The Olympics back in 776 B.C. were a little weird
  compared to todays Olympics. The women and young
  women couldnt participate in the Olympics
  because of unstated facts, they couldnt even
  watch because for some reason the men
  participated nude.
• The games were a lot different compared to
  todays. There were 24-stade races, races similar
  to the races run by boys. In the afternoon there
  was wrestling, boxing, and judo. The rules
  forbade only biting and gouging your opponents
  eyes. The most dangerous sport there was was the
  chariot race, 50 chariots would race each other
  and some of them would get overturned or locked
  wheels or even head on collisions. So now you
  know that ancient Olympics were a lot different
  that todays.

Modern Olympic Times
The first modern games were held in 1896 in
Athens, Greece. Although figure skating hockey
had been events in previous Games, the first
official Olympic Winter Games to feature these
events was in 1924.In the first half of the
twentieth century
The site of the ancient Olympic Games lay buried
until an archaeologist named Richard Chandler
unearthed it in 1766.Another change is the faces
of the competitors. In 1900, women began
competing in the Games.

Opening Ceremonies

• Opening Ceremonies
• The opening of the Olympic Games is very special.
  Lighting the torch, and the competitors entering
  is extreme. The flagbearer dips the flag in
  honor of the country. The Opening Ceremonies have
  continued as a grand highlight of the Games. As
  you probably know, the Games began in Greece.
  That means that the Greek competitors get to
  enter first. At the end of the Opening
  Ceremonies, there are a display of grand
  fireworks.

The Olympic Torch

• The tradition of lighting an Olympic torch in
  Olympia, Greece, has been of the modern Games for
  many years. At the Opening Ceremonies of the
  Games, the torch is carried into the stadium. He
  or she tilts the torch to light the large flame
  that will burn throughout the 16 days of the
  Games.

The Olympic Symbol

• The five rings, the familiar symbol of the
  Olympic Games, were discovered by archaeologists
  In modern Olympic Games, the rings on either end
  indicating the year of the Games and three rings
  in the middle representing the years in between.
  The rings colors are blue, yellow, black, green,
  and red. The five rings stand for the five
  continents North and South America, Europe,
  Asia, Africa, and Australia.

Olympic Disciplines, Events, and Sports!

• The International Olympic Committee chooses the
  disciplines, events, and sports for each Olympic
  Games. An Olympic sport is widely practiced by
  men in at least seventy-five countries and on
  four continents, and by women in at least forty
  countries and on three continents. Sports widely
  practiced in at least twenty-five countries and
  on three continents may be included in the
  program of the Olympic Winter Games.

No Drugs Allowed

• Testing athletes for the usage of
• drugs became official in 1968.
• They found that steroids (AAS) were being used by
  athletes for an
• extra athletic boost so they would perform
  better. Some athletes lost medals for having used
  steroids.

Closing Ceremonies

• After 16 days of intense athletic competition,
  the athletes enter the stadium one last time to
  say goodbye to their fans, congratulate the
  winners, and celebrate the Olympic experience.
  The Olympic flame is extinguished, and the
  Olympic flag is lowered to symbolize the closing
  of the Olympic Games.
