8URAIAN MATERI
9What is phonetics?
- Phonetics the physical manifestation of language
in sound waves - Phonetics studies of how these sounds are
articulated and perceived - The sound or human speech is produced by the
organs of speech
10Organs of speech
1) Nasal cavity2) Hard palate3) Alveoral
ridge4) Soft palate (Velum)5) Tip of the tongue
(Apex)6) Dorsum7) Uvula8) Radix9)
Pharynx10) Epiglottis11) False vocal cords12)
Vocal cords13) Larynx14) Esophagus15) Trachea.
11Voiced and voiceless sounds
- All speech sounds must be either voiced or
voiceless, since either the vocal cords are in
vibration or they are not. - All vowels are voiced sounds.
- Consonants can be made with or without voiced.
12- To describe correct pronunciation some kind of
symbolic presentation is needed. Every language
has a different phonetic alphabet and a different
set of possible phonemes and their combinations. - The phonetic alphabet is usually divided in two
main categories, vowels and consonants.
13- Vowels are always voiced sounds and they are
produced with the vocal cords in vibration, while
consonants may be either voiced or unvoiced. - Vowels have considerably higher amplitude than
consonants and they are also more stable and
easier to analyze and describe acoustically.
Because consonants involve very rapid changes
they are more difficult to synthesize properly.
14VOWELS
- English vowels may be classified by the manner
or place of articulation (front-back) and by the
shape of the mouth (open - close).

16CONSONANTS
- Consonants are classified according to the
organs articulating them (according to the place
where they are) and according to the manner of
their articulation (according to how they are
made).
