Title: CALIPSO

1
CALIPSO
  • Jeannie Hutchinson
  • Digital Imaging

2
What is CALIPSO?
  • Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder
    Satellite Observations satellite
  • What does it do?
  • Help scientists answer significant questions and
provide new information about the effects of
clouds and aerosols (airborne particles) on
    changes in the Earths climate.

3
Now what does that mean?
  • Lidar Light Detection and Ranging
  • It measures distance, speed, rotation, chemical
composition and concentration of a remote target

4
Info
  • CALIPSO will fly in a 3-channel lidar with a
suite of passive instruments in formation with
Aqua to obtain coincident observations of
    radiative fluxes and atmospheric conditions
  • This will greatly improve the ability to predict
    future climate changes

More info
  • CloudSat will also fly in formation with CALIPSO
to provide a comprehensive characterization of
the structure and composition of clouds and their
effects on climate under all weather conditions.
  • CALIPSO will be monitored and commanded from
    facilities in France.

7
Vital Stats
  • Launch is scheduled for May 26, 2005 from Western
    Test Range, Vandenberg AFB
  • Orbit Altitude of 587 km, an inclination of 98.2
degrees and it will be Sun-Synchronous

8
More Vital Stats
  • Weight 600 kg
  • Power 562 watts
  • Design Life 3 years
  • Satellite pointing can be controlled to about 300
    meters

9
On Board Instruments
  • A high resolution wide field camera (WFC), at 645
    nm
  • A 2-wavelength polarization sensitive lidar with
    a vertical resolution of 30 60 m and a
    horizontal resolution of 333m
  • An imaging infrared radiometer (IIR)
