Telling the hour

• From 200 to 1200, you use the phrase,
• Son las __(the number)_______.
• For example It is 300. Son las tres.
• It is 1100. Son las once.

• For 100, the phrase is different. You must use,

Telling minutes

• To tell the minutes after the hour, you use the
  word and in Spanish y
• By using the word y, you are adding the
  minutes.
• Only use this when the minutes are between 1-44.

• To say that it is 405, you start with 400 and
  add (y) 5 minutes.
• Son las cuatro y cinco.
• To say that it is 935, you start with 900 and
  add 35 minutes.
• Son las nueve y treinta y cinco.

Telling the minutes

• To say that it is 15 minutes (a quarter) after
  the hour, you use the word cuarto, not quince.
• Example It is 315.
• Son las tres y cuarto.
• It is 115.
• Es la una y cuarto.

  the hour, you use the word media, not treinta.
• Example It is 130.
• Es la una y media.

Telling the minutes

• When the minutes are between 45-59, you have to
  do some math.
• In Spanish, they go up 1 hour and subtract the
  remaining minutes until that hour.
• Example in English
• 453 would be 500 minus 7 minutes (60 minutes
  53 minutes 7)
• 1248 would be 100 minus 12 minutes (60 48
  12)

• In Spanish they use the word menos for minus.
• To say that it is 453, you must say that it is
  500 minus 7 minutes.
• Son las cinco menos siete.
• To say that it is 1248, you must say that it is
  100 minus 12.
• Es la una menos doce.

• Just like for 15 minutes after the hour, to say
  that it is 15 minutes (quarter til) before the
  hour, they use cuarto.

• In the Spanish language, there are 3 ways to say
  what part of day it is.
• De la mañana is used for the times between 1200
  am and 1200 pm.
• It is 730 am would be

  pm and 600 pm.

• There are special phrases that are used like
  English to indicate noon and midnight.
• It is noon.
• Es el mediodía.
• It is midnight.
• Es la medianoche.

Disclaimer

• Depending on the region that you visit, time
  could be heard differently. Most of the Latin
  America uses the 24 hour military clock which
  time is told using 24 hours. Some countries
  subtract and add at the 30 minute marker- half
  add and half subtract. Some countries will
  subtract at the 40 and add to 39. We recognize
  differences, but will teach, practice, and test
  according to the previous slides.
