Interesting Facts
  • Put your hand on your heart. Did you place your
hand on the left side of your chest? Many people
do, but the heart is actually located almost in
the center of the chest, between the lungs. It's
tipped slightly so that a part of it sticks out
and taps against the left side of the chest,
which is what makes it seem as though it is
    located there.
  • Does your heart ever stop?
  • Your heart beats every second of every day
    until the day you die?
  • Your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day
and about 35 million times in a year. During an
average lifetime, the human heart will beat more
    than 2.5 billion times.
  • An adult has about 5 ½ quarts of blood in his/her
    body

4
How Big Is Your Heart?
  • Hold out your hand and make a fist. If you're a
kid, your heart is about the same size as your
fist, and if you're an adult, it's about the same
    size as two fists.

Blood Flow Through The Heart
7
  • Day and night, the muscles of your heart
contract and relax to pump blood throughout your
body. When blood returns to the heart, it follows
    a complicated pathway.
  • It travels through four rooms. The blood that
comes from the body does not have oxygen in it.
  • The blood that comes from the lungs is carrying
    oxygen.

8
Blood The Magical Fluid
  • Blood has 4 parts
  • Plasma contains water, proteins, and minerals
  • Red Blood Cells are the waiters and waitresses
that carry food (O2 CO2) to cells
  • White Blood Cells The soldiers that attack and
    destroy invaders (germs)
  • Platelets causes blood to clot
  • When someone gets a cut, he
    or she
  • wants his/her blood to clot
    so that
  • bleeding stops.

Exercise and Your Heart
  • Exercise Makes Your Heart HappyYou may know that
your heart is a muscle. It works hard, pumping
blood every day of your life. You can help this
important muscle get stronger by doing aerobic
    (say air-o-bik) exercise.
  • Aerobic means "with air," so aerobic exercise is
a kind of activity that requires oxygen. When you
breathe, you take in oxygen, and, if you're doing
aerobic exercise, you may notice you're breathing
faster than normal. Aerobic activity can get your
heart pumping, make you sweaty, and quicken your
    breathing.
  • When your give your heart this kind of workout on
a regular basis, your heart will get even better
at its main job - delivering oxygen (in the form
of oxygen-carrying blood cells) to all parts of
    your body.
  • So you want to do some aerobic exercise? Try
swimming, basketball, ice or roller hockey,
jogging (or walking quickly), in-line skating,
soccer, cross-country skiing, biking, or rowing.
And don't forget that skipping, jumping rope, and
playing hopscotch are aerobic activities, too!
