What is Laterite?
  • Laterite is a natural soil that can be found in
    many tropical and subtropical areas
  • SG 2.51
  • Composed of insoluble iron and aluminum that is
left after the soluble elements are dissolved
  • It is widely available and cheap in many areas

These are laterite blocks Photograph from
wikipedia

What was done?
  • Used Laterite, Sand, Gravel (Coarse Aggregate),
    Potable Water, OPC
  • 124 CementFine Agg.Coarse Agg.
  • Replaced Sand with Laterite _at_ 0 (control), 20,
    40, 60, 80, 100
  • 3 specimens for each from a single batch
  • Demolded after 24hr, moist cured and strength
    tested at 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days
  • w/c constant 0.56
  • Followed ASTM and BS standards for testing

5
Results
  • Workability
  • Compressive Strength
  • Tensile Strength
  • Flexural Strength
  • Absorption/Permeability

Conclusions
  • As amount of Laterite is increases, workability
    increases
  • As Laterite content increases, water absorption
    of the concrete decreases
  • As Laterite content increases, strength decreases
  • With time Laterite increases in strength like
    typical concrete

12
Applications/Future
  • Shrinkage/Durability Testing
  • Reactivity Testing of more types of Laterite
  • Create Standards
  • Seemingly viable
