Title: Endocrine System

1
Endocrine System
  • Presented by
  • David Ehlers

2
Parts of the Endocrine System
3
The Functions
  • Adrenal glands- Produces hormones such as sex
    hormones.
  • Hypothalamus- Controls autonomic Functions
  • Pituitary- Controls functions of other endocrine
    glands
  • Pancreas- helps with the digestion and hormone
    production
  • Pineal body- Produces the hormone melatonin.

4
The Functions
  • Thyroid Gland- Takes iodine in foods and turns it
    into thyroid Hormones
  • Thymus- Destroys abnormal cells
  • Adrenal Glands- works with the hypothalamus and
    pituitary gland.
  • Ovaries- Contains egg cells necessary for
    reproduction
  • Testicles- Produces testosterone and sperm

5
How Hormones Work
  • Hormones are chemical messengers that travel
    throughout the body making processes
  • Growth
  • Metabolism
  • Fertility
  • Alters with Behavior
  • Makes your body change
  • Especially during puberty

6
Negative Feedback Loop
  • The negative feedback loop in the endocrine
system prevents the system from becoming
    overactive.

7
Blood Glucose Level
  • The body uses blood sugar levels using two
    mechanisms
  • Hunger
  • Insulin
  • Body forms glucose when it breaks foods that a
    person eats
  • Then turns into a usable form of energy
  • Glucose is a main energy source for the body
  • Measuring the amount of blood glucose in the
    blood helps evaluate
  • How the body breaks foods down into energy
  • How the liver is working
  • How the organs in the body help regulate blood
    glucose

8
Diseases
  • Crushing Syndrome- A lot of glucocorticoid
    hormones in the body
  • Type 1 Diabetes - When the pancreas fails to
    produce enough insulin

9
Vocabulary
  • Hormone- Substance produced by a tissue and
carried by the bloodstream to effect growth or
    metabolism
  • Thyroid gland- Two-lobed gland
  • Adrenal gland- Either of tow small glands,
    located above each kidney
  • Pancreas- A long irregularly shaped gland
  • Pineal glands- Small cone shaped organs in the
    brain.
  • Parathyroid gland- Small kidney shaped glands
    that lie in pairs
  • Thymus- Small glandular organ behind the breast
    bone

10
Vocabulary
  • Testis- Together with the scrotum
  • Ovary- The female reproductive organ that
    produces ova
  • Pituitary gland- a small oval endocrine gland
    attached to the vertebrate brain
  • Hypothalamus- Part of the brain that regulates
    temperature
  • Epinephrine- An adrenal hormone that constricts
    blood vessels
  • Insulin-a pancreatic hormone that regulates
    metabolism of carbohydrates and fats
  • Glucagons- a pancreatic hormone that raises
    blood sugar levels

11
Vocabulary
  • Homeostasis- the ability of an organism of cells
  • Norepinephrine- mediates chemical communication
    in the sympathetic nervous system
  • Growth Hormone- A growth hormone that you go
    through during puberty
