• Two Kirklees primary schools were visited by the
  National Co-ordinator as part her initial
  evidence gathering exercise.
• Piloted in LAs not already involved in any other
  EMA/EAL National Strategy.
• Pack of case studies and DVD highlighting best
  practice.
• LAs expected to disseminate cited best practice.

New Arrivals to Kirklees

• Following national trends the majority of new
  arrivals enrolled in Kirklees schools since 1st
  January 2007 are children of EU migrant families.
• Polish 26
• Hungarian 17 (including Roma)
• Lithuanian 5
• Arabic 15

New Arrivals (continued)

• Most of these new arrivals are at an early stage
  of English language acquisition
• They are more widely dispersed than Refugee and
  Asylum Seekers and the numerically strongest
  ethnic minority groups in Kirklees.
• Only one Locality does not have schools with new
  arrivals on roll.

• Children from EU migrant families are-
• being enrolled at school where staff have little
  or no prior experience of teaching pupils at the
  early stage of acquiring English.
• often linguistically isolated with resulting
  difficulties in communication between
  pupil/teacher and family/school.

• Schools supporting new arrivals-
• frequently do not have adults or peers who share
  the new arrivals heritage language
• do not have dual language dictionaries or other
  resources in the appropriate language
• need reassurance that the EAL skills staff
  possess can be transferred and are relevant even
  if they do not speak the childs heritage
  language

• Additional funding has been made available for
  pupils who -
• attended a British school for the first time no
  earlier than 1st January 2007 and have not
  attended a school overseas where English was the
  language of instruction
• are linguistically isolated
• are at the very early stages of English language
  acquisition

Pharos Project

• Intended as an intervention to raise self-esteem
  and reinforce self-identity to support mental
  health and well-being for a group recognised as
  at risk
• Small group work 20 minutes sessions three times
  a week a total of 20 session in its entirety
  but is organised in themes that can be delivered
  as stand alone

Target Group

• Maximum 8-10 pupils
• Asylum seekers, refugees and other new arrivals
  i.e EU migrants
• Reasonable level of language proficiency
• Pupils of a similar age range
• Reasonable gender mix

Pharos in Kirklees

• Subject of a workshop at the June EMA conference
• Anticipated introduction delayed due to a block
  on recruitment of peripatetic CSA
• Advert going out 5th December with interviews in
  the New Year
• 4 schools who previous expressed an interest to
  be contacted with a view to implementation in the
  Spring Term
