Title: Introducing the interactive whiteboard into education

1
Introducing the interactive whiteboard into
education
  • V. Door, Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education
  • CESsW

2
The general problem of managing the introduction
of new technologies into teaching and learning
  • Well-documented in secondary education, e.g.
Miller et al (2005), Parr (1999)
  • Reluctance to use/ slow start in using/lack of
development in use linked to existing beliefs of
    teachers

3
Large investments..
  • But low overall use due to
  • lack of collaborative culture, manifested in
lack of time, lack of support, e.g. Becker
    Ravitz (1999)
  • So teacher practice slow to change

4
And yet how useful
  • E.g. Jacobson Archodidou (20001) refer to
    computer technologies as
  • Learning tools that help students construct
rich and useful understandings of challenging
    knowledge
  • Or of IAWs specifically, evidence emerging that
there are specific learning gains e.g. in
visualisation of concepts (Damcott et al, 2000),
    pupil involvement through discussion and
    questioning (Nonis OBannon, 2001)
  • And a very innovative and powerful support for
language acquisition (Gerard et al, 1999)

5
Learning to use them
  • Our experience in ITE and my experience working
    with the ELU is
  • Longer workshops provide less learning gains than
  • small, specific periods of training, needs driven
    works best
  • Regular use is vital to development of IAW
    specific pedagogic skills
