1Close to nature management in forests with
prevailing ecological and social functions
Dr. Martin MoravcÃk at al.
2Target of contribution
- To present proposal of procedures of forest
management planning aimed at close to nature
management in forests with prevailing ecological
and social functions on the example of
mountain forests in Norway spruce vegetation
zone (SVZ)
3Starting points for proposal of procedures of
forest management planning in SVZ
- Forests fulfil their ecological and also social
functions the best in such status that is
responding to the status of primeval forests -
untouched by man. - Targets of management should be aimed at
conser-vation of permanent existence of forest,
with suitable spatial, age and tree species
structure, preserved self-regulating abilities
and good health conditions. - For enforcement of these targets is needed to
improve procedures of forest management planning,
mainly management models and detailed planning
including determination of need and urgency of
measures so that they meet the requirements of
close to nature forestry.
4Specification of the tasks
- To secure collection, processing and evaluation
of empirical material with the aim to acquire new
knowledge on functionally desirable status of the
forests of SVZ. - To derive management models on the basis of the
processed empirical material and literary
sources. - To complete into the system of forest management
planning indicators suitable for detection,
monitoring and evaluation of the status and
development of forests with strong differentiated
stand structure (indicators of height and
diameter variability, slenderness coefficient,
crown length etc.) - To propose objective procedure for determination
of need and urgency of measures (especially in
dependence on naturalness class).
5Empirical material for realization of specified
tasks was obtained mainly from 122 circle
research plots with size from 2 to 10 are so
that there were at least 25 trees on each
research plot. Status of the forest ecosystems on
the research plots was complexly analysed
6Frequency and distribution of the empirical
material

13Need and uregeny of the measures (interventions)
14Criteria for evaluation of the naturalness class
15Table for determination of the degree of
diameter dispersion
16Determination of the share of canopy levels ()
- Canopy levels are specified by distribution of
stand profile from terrene to upper height in
thirds - Each tree on the research (sample) plot is
involved into that level which interferes with
its top
17Evaluation of static stability
18Evaluation of the health conditions
- Damage by injurious agents and defoliation (loss
of foliage) are evaluated. - By their combination is evaluated health
condition as follows - Excellent
- Slightly declined
- Mediumly declined
- Strongly declined
- Caduceus or died forest
19Evaluation of status of the natural regeneration
- According to existing spatial and age stand
structure are compared both actual status and
desired status of natural regeneration (NR) as
follows - Fully corresponding NR (91 100 )
- Sufficient NR (61 90 )
- Medium NR (41 60 )
- Slight NR (11 40 )
- Minimal NR (to 10 )
