Lehigh River Watershed
GIS/GPS
  • Tina Randazzo
  • Paul Tsai

2
GIS Overview
  • Partnership with the Wildlands Conservancy
  • Ongoing 4 year project
  • GIS mapping provides a spatial framework for
analyzing environmental data, such as water
quality data, and relating it to the
characteristics of the land around it.
  • LEO's capabilities are particularly focused on
water quality research on the Lehigh River and
    its many tributaries.

3
Project Goals
  • Create coverages of various environmental
categories in the Lehigh River watershed.
  • Make coverages available to other LEO users.
  • Make coverages accessible on the web.

4
Tools and Resources

How do we do what we do?
  • What steps are involved in
  • making a coverage?

8
Two Examples
  • Creation of Sub Basin
  • Leads to Watershed boundary
  • Continuing work on tributaries

9
Getting data
Data is usually downloaded by county. In this
example we downloaded basin information for all
watershed counties. However, there is too much
Information.
10
Clipping Data
Zooming into the area of interest, I overlaid a
stream coverage of all the streams flowing into
the Lehigh River. Now I need to Clip the
wanted basins.
11
Final Basin
Here is the final Basin. By letting the
computer handle more of the processes, we
eliminate many possible errors.
GW Hunter
12
Whats the difference?
The Difference between the old and new basins is
obvious in the picture shown. Now, we need
to Convert the basins into sub basins.
13
Basins to Sub Basins
Zooming in with the stream coverage overlaid, we
can now select the basins that form a sub
basin (basins that include streams that into
the Lehigh River).

Difficulties
As evident in the picture, many streams flow into
the Lehigh River (pink). So deciding which
Waterways should be considered as a major
tributary is very difficult, since by
definition all these streams are tributaries.
17
After many hours...
It was decided that these waterways be classified
as major tributaries of the Lehigh River.
