4We were given a task to create a unmanned rescue
machine for one of the following disaster
situations
- A volcano has erupted and a stream of molten lava
is heading towards a village - An earthquake zone with crumpled landscape and
demolished houses - A small aircraft/helicopter has come down on a
heavily crevassed glacier - A group of cars is trapped in the Mont Blanc
tunnel by rock fall - A submarine lies disabled at the bottom of the
ocean
We chose rescuing people from an earthquake. This
presentation will guide you through our journey.
5OUR RESEARCH
6What causes earthquakes to happen?
The earth is made up of huge pieces of flat rock
called plates. These move slowly, and where they
meet is called a fault. When the plates rub
together, the movement makes waves of energy
which come to the earth's surface. This causes
tremors and shakes more commonly known as
earthquakes.
7Are they dangerous?
Earthquakes can be very dangerous. They can make
buildings fall down and set off landslides, as
well as having many other deadly effects.
Earthquakes are measured on the Richter scale.
The Richter scale goes from 0 up to 9. The higher
the number on the scale, the more powerful the
quake. The more powerful a quake, the more damage
it can cause. Earthquakes have killed lots of
people even though scientists have made buildings
much safer than they previously were.
Unfortunately many quakes happen in parts of the
world where people dont have the money to spend
on safety measures.
8How often do they happen?
There are over a million earthquakes each year in
all parts of the world. Most earth quakes we
cant even feel because they are so far
underneath us. Britain doesn't have a history of
devastating earthquakes but there are 200 to 250
on average a year.
9Why is it dangerous after an earthquake?
Earthquakes are often followed by aftershocks.
These are smaller quakes which bring more damage
to already weakened buildings and roads. Land,
especially hills, can also be damaged by
earthquakes and can result devastating landslides
and mudslides.

12OUR DESIGNS
13First, we each drew a vehicle that we thought had
the necessary features.
Here we are some of our ideas...
14This is Catherine, Ezra and Sarah-Janes first
thoughts.
15Olivia decided to make hers look like a cow.
16Catherine has several gadgets on her design.
17SarahJane also has lots of gadgets on her design.
18Andrew goes for the drill on his design.
19We saw each others designs and all drew another
picture. Some of us changed from our original
designs and others stuck.

20Andrew thinks tracks would be best.
21SarahJane thinks an alarm is an essential
component.
22Olivia thinks an oxygen tank is necessary.
23Sarah-Jane still thinks cat flaps are important.
24Catherine believes ropes to be a good idea.
25Next, we thought about what would be put inside
the vehicle. We decided the inside would have
- Bottles of water
- First aid kits
- Information cards on how to deal with different
things e.g. broken legs - Fold down seats
- Telephone to contact the base
- Oxygen tanks
- Calming music or young childrens TV to calm
people down
26We all put our heads together and drew our final
design. We made a card model from our drawings.

28We have worked hard on our design. Maybe one day,
sometime in the future, the Quaker design could
save many lives
