• Students wish to learn from best teachers
• Everybody wants the best books
• And best environment
• And best students

• Every school is not the best
• Every teacher is not the best
• Every student is not the best
• Everybody cannot always get the best of everything

What to Do?

• Solution 1 Go in search of the best
• Solution 2 Make every school, every teacher,
  every student, every classroom, every library,
  every laboratory the best

Is it possible?

• If not the best, we can surely hope for better
• Improvement is the very essence of life
• If you are not improving, you are going backwards
  at the rate of one day per day!

• Schools for the rich and elite
• Government schools for name sake
• Quantity versus Quality
• Books, Syllabus, student-teacher-ratio
• Parrots Read-Remember-Reproduce
• Creativity? Individuality? Freedom?
• Examination oriented education

Schooling versus Education

• Education must be fun, not burden
• Forcing everybody into the same mould is a great
  danger
• Things have become too complex, too confusing,
  too mechanical
• I did not let my schooling interfere with my
  education

Where we want to go

• Students learn ¼ from the teacher they must be
  allowed to pick up the rest ¼ by interaction
  with fellow students, ¼ by thinking, trying,
  experimenting etc
• Dont teach them everything let them learn

• Think beyond IIT,Engineering,Medicine
• 2/3 of earth is water, but there is no water to
  drink! Who will solve this problem?
• We have conquered Everest, space, moon but not
  mosquitoes! Who will do that?
• We are losing our ancient wealth of knowledge
  medicine, astronomy Who will do that?

How to get there?

• Do not just Instruct. Inspire
• Teach them human values
• The aim is not to teach (ab)2, but how to live!
• Building Good Citizens, Useful Citizens
• Right Attitude is everything

Role of Language

• We know things through language
• We make ourselves known through language
• Clarity of thought and clarity of expression go
  together
• Carelessness or looseness of thought about
  language is more dangerous than careless use of
  language

• It has been established that learning through
  ones own language is the best
• Local language schools, teachers, books,
  materials, scope have all been inferior and so
  nobody wants to go there. But technology can
  change things for better.

  Network Multi-Media
• Colors, pictures, animations, games, sounds!
• Learning by doing
