Bryan wanted a federal income tax, a lower
tariff, and new anti-trust laws. Taft wins the
election.

- Cautious, little credit for his accomplishments
- Busted 90 trusts in four years, twice as many
as TR

- Tariffs Taft signed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff
which kept many tariffs on manufactured goods. - Progressives angered by this.

- Conservationists angered when conservation land,
1 million acres, in the west was sold off to
private companies who resold it to large
corporations.

- Pinchot worked for the Dept. of Interior and
complained, was fired, and wrote a muckraking
article - on exploitation of natural resources.
9The Republican Party Splits
- Some wanted progressive reforms and believed Taft
was against conservation. People believed that
Payne-Aldrich was the cause of the rising cost of
living.
