3
Orson Scott Card
  • Card says that as a child, he thought as an adult
thinks with real emotions and complex thoughts.
He wanted to tell a story that expressed those
ideas from a childs point of view. Throughout
the book, you may find yourself questioning
whether or not Ender is a believable character
because he thinks and reacts like an adult rather
    than a child.

4
Themes
  • Ruthlessness and Violence- is it necessary?
    Peter symbolizes unbridled ruthlessness while
Enders ruthlessness is always the last resort.
  • Compassion- is this what separates Ender from all
    others?
  • Adult/Child Relationships do the adults
    manipulate the children?
  • Humanity- What does it mean to be human?

5
Read Chapter 1 and 2
  • What assumptions can you make about each of these
    characters?
  • Ender
  • Peter
  • Valentine

6
  • "Human beings are free except when humanity needs
them. Maybe humanity needs you. To do something.
Maybe humanity needs meto find out what you're
good for. We might both do despicable things,
Ender, but if humankind survives, then we were
    good tools."
  • -Graff

7
  • While reading ask yourself
  • Does the end justify the means?
  • Is it ok to do immoral things in order to save
    humanity?
