Title: The Aaronic Priesthood

1
The Aaronic Priesthood
  • A Figure of Christ

2
The Aaronic Priesthood
  • Exo 281-4
  • Now take Aaron your brother, and his sons with
him, from among the children of Israel, that he
may minister to Me as priest

3
(1) Aaron is a high priest
  • Christ The High Priest (Heb 4-10)
  • Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who
has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of
God, let us hold fast our confession. (Heb 414)

4
(2) Aaron was called
  • Aaron was called and did not covet the position,
    but was appointed by God
  • Now take Aaron your brother, and his sons with
him, from among the children of Israel, that he
may minister to Me as priest (Exo 281)
  • And no man takes this honor to himself, but he
who is called by God, just as Aaron was. (Heb
    54)
  • So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become
High Priest, but it was He who said to Him  You
are My Son, Today I have begotten You.As He also
says in another placeYou are a priest
forever According to the order of Melchizedek
    (Heb 55-6)

5
(3) Aaron was from among his people
  • Aaron represented and related to his people
  • He was one of them of the tribe of Levi
  • Related to their history, feelings, hopes
  • He is able to understand and relate to their
    issues and better serve them
  • For every high priest taken from among men is
appointed for men in things pertaining to God,
that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for
sins. He can have compassion on those who are
ignorant and going astray, since he himself is
also subject to weakness. (Heb 51-2)

6
(3) Aaron related to his people
  • Christ represented and related to his people
  • He was incarnate and became man
  • For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be
conformed to the image of His Son, that He might
be the firstborn among many brethren. (Rom 829)
  • For both He who sanctifies and those who are
being sanctified are all of one, for which reason
He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying
I will declare Your name to My brethren(Heb
    211-13)

7
(3) Aaron related to his people
  • Through incarnation, He became one with us in
flesh and blood, to destroy our enemy
  • Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of
flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in
the same, that through death He might destroy him
who had the power of death, that is, the devil
    (Heb 214)
  • Therefore, in all things He had to be made like
His brethren, that He might be a merciful and
faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God,
to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
For in that He Himself has suffered, being
tempted, He is able to aid those who are
    tempted. (Heb 217-18)
  • For we do not have a High Priest who cannot
sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all
points tempted as we are, yet without sin. (Heb
    415)

10
(4) Aarons garments
  • The Breastplate of Judgment
  • He revealed Gods judgment to people through
Urim and Thummim (lights and perfections) (Num
    2721, 1Sam 286)
  • The high priest has the authority to judge his
people through Gods enlightenment and guidance
  • Christ revealed the Father to us, and His plans
  • No one has seen God at any time. The only
begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father,
He has declared Him. (Jn 118)
  • For the Father judges no one, but has committed
all judgment to the Son (Jn 522)

11
(4) Aarons garments
  • The Breastplate of Judgment Aaron carried the
names of the tribes on his shoulders and his
    chest (heart)
  • Shoulders strength
  • Chest love, kindness
  • He carries his people (and all their problems and
sins) with his strength, while his heart is full
    of love towards them
  • But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in
that while we were still sinners, Christ died for
    us. (Rom 58)

gospel to the poor      He has sent Me to heal
the brokenhearted,      To proclaim liberty to
the captives      And recovery of sight to the
blind,      To set at liberty those who are
oppressed      To proclaim the acceptable year
    of the LORD.

  • Golden plate HOLINESS TO THE LORD He, his
service, his people are all sanctified to the
    Lord
  • Christ King of kings
  • He sanctified Himself for the salvation of His
    people
  • And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they
also may be sanctified by the truth. (Jn 1719)

15
(4) Aarons garments
  • The Band (Exo 28 8), The Sash/Girdle (Exo
    2839)
  • Ready for work and service
  • Jesus rose from supper and laid aside His
garments, took a towel and girded Himself. (Jn
    134)
  • For even the Son of Man did not come to be
served, but to serve, and to give His life a
    ransom for many. (Mk 1045)

16
(4) Aarons garments
  • Garments for glory and beauty (Exo 2840)
  • Christ is adorned in glory and beauty
  • I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and
lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the
    temple. (Isa 61)
  • Also from the appearance of His waist and upward
I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the
appearance of fire all around within it and from
the appearance of His waist and downward I saw,
as it were, the appearance of fire with
brightness all around. Like the appearance of a
rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the
appearance of the brightness all around it. This
was the appearance of the likeness of the glory
    of the LORD.(Ezk 127-28)
  • He was transfigured before them. His face shone
like the sun, and His clothes became as white as
    the light. (Matt 172-3)

17
(5) Aaron anointed by Holy Oil
  • (Exo 2921)
  • To be consecrated for the service
  • To receive the Holy Spirit
  • Christ Messiah The Anointed One
  • Anointed by the Holy Spirit
  • During His baptism
  • The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me (Lk 20)

18
(6) Aaron washed
  • (Exo 2921)
  • Purification
  • External purity points to internal purity
  • Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed
appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full
of dead mens bones and all uncleanness. (Matt
    2327)
  • Baptism
  • There is also an antitype which now saves
usbaptism (not the removal of the filth of the
flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward
God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ
    (1Pet 321)

19
(7) Aarons Service
  • Representative of the people
  • For every high priest taken from among men is
appointed for men in things pertaining to God
    ... (Heb 51)
  • For when we were still without strength, in due
time Christ died for the ungodly. (Rom 56)

20
(7) Aarons Service
  • Shepherd of the people
  • For you were like sheep going astray, but have
now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your
    souls. (1Pet 225)
  • I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives
His life for the sheep. (Jn 1011)

21
(7) Aarons Service
  • Teacher of the law
  • For the lips of a priest should keep
knowledge,And people should seek the law from
his mouth For he is the messenger of the LORD
    of hosts. (Mal 27)
  • And they were astonished at His teaching, for
His word was with authority. (Lk 423)
  • Judge of the people
  • And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true for
I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent
    Me. (Jn 816)

22
(7) Aarons Service
  • Atoner for his people
  • Only the high priest was allowed to atone for the
people inside the Holy of Holies
  • Nor is there salvation in any other, for there
is no other name under heaven given among men by
which we must be saved. (Act 412)
  • But Christ came as High Priest of the good
things to come, with the greater and more perfect
tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of
this creation. Not with the blood of goats and
calves, but with His own blood He entered the
Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained
    eternal redemption. (Heb 96-12)
  • Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter
the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and
living way which He consecrated for us, through
the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High
Priest over the house of God (Heb 10 19-21)

23
(7) Aarons Service
  • Intercessor for his people
  • But He, because He continues forever, has an
unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is also
able to save to the uttermost those who come to
God through Him, since He always lives to make
    intercession for them. (Heb 724)
  • And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the
Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (1Jn 21)
