Authority or credentials
  • Jean Pennington, PH.D., R.D., is an author in the
    area of food and nutrient databases. She received
    her degrees in physiology and nutrition from the
    University of California at Berkeley. Early in
    her career, Dr. Pennington taught nutrition and
    physiology courses in the San Francisco Bay area
    for eight years. For the past 20 years, she has
    served as a public health nutritionist with the
    U.S. government. She resides in Chevy Chase,
    Maryland.

  • This update of a text cited in Books for
    College Libraries, 3d ed. and Guide to Reference
    Books supplies the latest US standards for
    dietary intake of macro- and micro-nutrients. The
    main tables list values for 30 nutrients in some
    8000 foods (including medicinal foods), often
    cite specific brands. Supplementary tables
    provide cross-referenced information on food
    components of increasing interest (e.g, omega-3
    and trans fatty acids), for which data are
    insufficient for inclusion in the main tables.
    The preface to the 1937 edition, which pioneered
    the emphasis on serving size, is included.

  • I use similar reference books, but I like this
    one better for
  • Many more food listings,
  • Practical portion sizes,
  • Food name cross reference,
  • More fast food chains,
  • Plastic comb binding.
  • The heights, weights, and intake chart is not
    useful
  • Goes by median in U.S. instead of by what would
    be healthy ranges for different body types, ages,
    etc.

    tools. Information is based primarily on data

  • The only thing easier about using Food Values of
    Portions Commonly Used is being able to look up a
    particular restaurant and look at their whole
    menu at one time. For instance, when looking in
    the book for low sodium items at KFC, you can
    look up KFC and run your finger down the sodium
    column. On these websites, you have to click on
    each item separately.
