HOW to Get New Members
  • Develop membership committee/vice president of

  • Tell your existing membership you need members

  • Develop a mission statement for your club
  • Publicize the benefits of club membership

  • Recruit for club needs e.g., newsletter editor

  • On-going members participate in Club achievements
  • Use permanent name tags for members
  • Use special tags for new members
  • Use the logo as much as possible

  • Know your members know their talents
  • Identify the people persons, the planners, the
    doers, the organizers, the leaders/followers
  • Match members with their skills
  • Empower members when assigned a task

  • Make them feel good about their assignment and
    themselves when they do it.
  • If the experience is satisfying and rewarding,
    the members will want to continue and
    participate!

  • Officers should NOT do everything
  • Dont deprive members the reward of learning
  • Encourage all members to do what they do best
  • Get new members to the first three events
  • Use different people on committees/events
  • Plan events/committees at beginning of year
  • Give assignments to spouses

  • Post quotations about how great members and
    volunteers are
  • Compliment volunteers constantly and thank them
    constantly
  • Bring back favors collected from conferences
  • Have longevity pins to wear on name tags
  • Have pins on name tags for recruiting new members
  • Send personal thank-you notes during volunteer
    week
  • Calculate money saved by volunteers (hours x
    minimum wage)

  • Nominate a member for every external award that
    comes along
  • local, state, national.
  • Take time to listen to them constantly
  • Be interested enough to ask pertinent questions
  • Celebrate arrival of new grandchildren
  • Post a list of birthdays for the month in the
    newsletter/office
  • Thank individuals specifically for a specific job
    well done
  • In front of the volunteer, tell others how much
    you appreciate what the volunteer does be
    specific
  • Write a letter to the volunteers supervisor
  • Subscribe to this motto If it is great, you did
    it If it is OK, we did it If it is bad, I did
    it.
  • Celebrate successes always!

  • Give gift certificates from Baskin-Robbins
    McDonalds
  • Print a certificate and tape it around a giant
    Hershey Bar
  • Thank the volunteer by name in a public speech
  • At an event distribute Thanks Volunteers
    T-shirts with Sharpies and allow time to sign
    each others shirts
  • Send Valentines (penny elementary school ones
    are nostalgic)
  • Praise the volunteer to his or her spouse and
    children
  • On a 3x5 card Without you, wed be in a real
    Crunch (attach a mini Crunch bar)
  • Have a timecard for the volunteers to sign
    in/sign out
  • Keep good volunteer records
  • Have a We Have Great Volunteers pizza party

  • Put up a bulletin board and post photos of your
    smiling volunteers. Attach a folder containing
    application forms.
  • Give incentives to volunteers who recruit other
    volunteers
  • Put names and pictures in Newspaper/Newsletter
    articles
  • Have a Chocolate/Ice Cream salute to volunteers
  • Give Candles (You Light Up My Life)
  • Special parking privileges
  • Give movie certificates
  • Publish an Open Letter of Thanks to volunteers in
    the newspaper
  • Name the coffee pot after a volunteer each month
    for serving well
  • Take suggestions seriously
  • Give credit where credit is due
  • Brag. But not on yourself.

Ways to alienate Volunteers
  • Take all the credit for yourself
  • Never take any of the blame
  • Forget special occasions or other important
    considerations
  • Criticize publicly. And loudly
  • In any way, make them feel your time is more
    precious than theirs
  • Pretend their opinion matters, but never listen
    to what they say
  • Have an us versus them mindset
  • Only give out menial tasks, no matter what the
    volunteer asked to do and no matter what their
    skills are
  • Keep volunteers in the dark about the
    organizations activities and goals
  • Order. Constantly
  • Assume.
  • Ignore.

  • Be sure all members know how to recruit
  • Respond to new member surveys by using people
    where they do best.
  • Surveys show people never join because theyre
    never asked
  • Get full name and address of all guests
  • List new members in your newsletter/short bio.
    Include photos of new members.
