Part A - The Essay Topic
  • Within the range of 1800 to 2,200 words,
  • Discuss how the various people in the designer
restaurant organisation can contribute to its
human resource planning efforts. Include in this
discussion the challenges and advantages the
organisation faces with its human resource
    planning.
  • Finally, critically discuss whether a
compensation strategy would benefit the designer
restaurant in achieving its strategic direction.

Question 1
What does this mean?
Question 2
What does this mean?
7
Question 1What it means to discuss
  • To consider and offer some interpretation of a
    concept
  • (interpret means to make clear the meaning of
    something and its implications)
  • To identify arguments for and against an issue..
  • Not to be confused with describe or define
  • To present a detailed account of a concept
  • To use definitions to identify a concept

Marshall, L. Rowland, F. 1993, 2nd edn., Guide
to Learning Independently, Longman Cheshire,
Milton, Queensland. Peters, P. 1985, Strategies
for Student Writers, Wiley and Sons, Melbourne.
8
Therefore, where Question 1 asks you to
discuss, consider
  • What is the good bad of involving various
people in the designer restaurant organisation in
    its human resource planning efforts.
  • ALTERNATIVELY .
  • What are the implications of involving various
people in the designer restaurant organisation in
    its human resource planning efforts.
  • Include in this discussion the challenges and
advantages the organisation faces with its human
    resource planning.

The HR theory should guide you as to what
various people you should consider
This aspect provides further items to contribute
to your discussion
9
Question 2What is critical discussion?
  • You make a judgement on the authors point of
    view or claim
  • To do this you need to determine
  • whether the premise or base of
  • the authors view or claim is logical
  • /sound, or on the other hand, faulty.
  • You need to support your position to either
accept or reject the authors claim with
    evidence.
  • Writing up your position on the authors
statement and supplying evidence to support your
opinion forms the content of this essay.

10
Determine whether you are going to accept or
reject the claim in the essay topic.
  • If you accept.
  • A compensation strategy would benefit the
designer restaurant in achieving its strategic
    direction.

Develop your claim, using theory as your
premise You need to support your opinion by
referring to strategic compensation theory that
suggests a compensation strategy supports the
success of a corporate strategy (via a strategic
HR plan).
11
Determine whether you are going to accept or
reject the claim in the essay topic.
  • If you reject
  • A compensation strategy does not benefit the
designer restaurant in achieving its strategic
    direction.

Develop your claim, using theory as your
premise You need to support your opinion by
referring to HR planning theory that does not
identify a compensation strategy as a component
of its success.
12
Determine whether you are going to accept or
reject the claim in the essay topic.
  • Consider .
  • Is there a black and white answer
  • Accept Reject Alternative?

13
So . what evidence can I use to accept or reject
the statement?
  • Information from the Designer Restaurant Case
    study
  • PLUS Any relevant HR theory
  • Relevant information from your textbook or
    selected readings
  • Relevant information from your further research
    at the library
  • Do not use your personal experience as evidence.

14
What is the difference between descriptive
writing and critical writing?
  • To illustrate this point

This morning was stressful! I overslept.
Because of this I didnt get to finish the cup
of tea I was drinking whilst I frantically
packed lunch boxes for my two sons. When I
thought I had finished, my older son reminded me
that I had to pack extra for his afternoon tea
because he was going to soccer practice after
school. So, back to the pantry I went in search
of extra lunch box goodies. This was very
inconvenient, because I need extra time to get
myself ready on Mondays! Monday is my lecture
day and I want to look very professional for my
students! Today I had to get dressed
at lightening speed.
Write a sentence (or two) about 3 things you
did when you got out of bed this morning
What is your judgment about the type of morning
you experienced based on those 3 things
This morning I got up and drank a ½ cup of tea,
packed my sons school lunches and got dressed
for work.
15
What is the difference between descriptive
writing and critical writing?
If you had to critique what I wrote, you would
need to argue whether or not I have a logical
premise to support my claim?
This is my claim
  • This morning was stressful!
  • I overslept. Because of this I didnt get to
    finish the
  • cup of tea I was drinking whilst I frantically
    packed
  • lunch boxes for my two sons. When I thought I
  • had finished, my older son reminded me that I had
    to
  • pack extra for his afternoon tea because he was
    going
  • to soccer practice after school. So, back to the
  • pantry I went in search of extra lunch
  • box goodies. This was very inconvenient,
  • because I need extra time to get myself ready on
  • Mondays! Monday is my lecture day
  • and I want to look very professional
  • for my students! Today I had to get dressed at
  • lightening speed.

The remainder establishes the premise (or
grounds) to my claim
16
What is the difference between descriptive
writing and critical writing?
Referring back to the descriptive writing about
my morning
NOTICE There is no Claim / Opinion or Judgements
NOTICE There are no premises (or grounds) being
developed that could support a claim
  • This morning I got
  • up and drank a ½
  • cup of tea, packed
  • my sons school
  • lunches and got
  • dressed for work.

17
What is the difference between descriptive
writing and critical writing?
NOTICE But still these points do not explain how
I came to making this claim
NOTICE This time I made a claim
  • This morning was
  • stressful!
  • I got up and drank
  • ½ cup of tea,
  • packed my sons
  • school lunches
  • and got dressed
  • for work.

Whats missing? The articulated LINKS between
the mornings activities and how they
influenced the way the morning went for me.
18
What is the difference between descriptive
writing and critical writing?
Notice it didnt argue for or against the claim.
It simply defined recruitment and the internet
and outlined sources of advertising
  • THE CLAIM
  • Recruitment is best done via the internet.
  • DESCRIPTIVE RESPONSE
  • Recruitment is the process that employers use to
attract people to apply for a job. People find
out about job vacancies through job
advertisements that employers place in the
newspaper and on the internet. The internet
provides exposure to millions of people worldwide
    to job vacancies.

19
What is the difference between descriptive
writing and critical writing?
  • THE CLAIM
  • Recruitment is best done via the internet.
  • CRITICAL RESPONSE
  • Recruitment is best done via the internet because
the internet is world wide, is fast and reduces
the need for staff to deal directly with
applicants (Smythe 2005). Other methods do not
prove to be a better option. The internet far
out ways the negatives of newspaper advertising
which is very expense and has time delays (Howe
2004). Radio advertising cannot outdo the
internet because the radio is not suited to
promoting the information rich material found in
job advertisements (Howe 2004 Williams 2001).
So, it is reasonable to suggest that the internet
provides the best avenue for recruitment.

Argues in favour of the claim on the premise of
its benefits over the other methods (newspaper
and radio)

Section 2Research for the Essay
27
The essay requires that you
  • (p. 11 of Introductory Book)
  • Find and cite within your essay a minimum of six
    (6) sources for this assignment.
  • (a) these sources must be journal articles, text
    book or other credible sources.
  • (b) private web pages such as pages of study
notes from other university courses are not
acceptable. Websites must be of a scholarly and
    credible nature
  • (c) These sources must be in addition to the text
    and selected readings.
  • (d) You can use the articles supplied between
pages 19-26 of the introductory book (there are
five), and these WILL count towards your six
    articles.

28
Using Websites for academic work

Using the librarys electronic databases to find
scholarly articles
  • Recommend an electronic database called
    EBSCOHost.

  • Section 3
  • Referencing

43
Why do we reference?
  • So the reader can locate the source of your
    information
  • To acknowledge of work of someone else
  • To provide scholarly support for your opinion or
    idea

Plagiarism occurs when you use someone else's
work or ideas without acknowledging that you have
used them. This includes using another student's
material.
44
USQ Penalties for
plagiarism or collusion
  • Formal warning
  • Reduction of up to 20 of marks available for
piece of assessment (1st offence) or
  • Student be failed in piece of assessment (1st
    offence)
  • Student be awarded a grade of Fail in course (2nd
    offence)
  • Student be withdrawn from course with academic
    penalty (2nd offence)
  • Student be excluded from course or program for
specified period of time 1-3 years (3rd 4th
    offence)

45
When to include an in text reference
  • More easily addressed by considering what NOT TO
    reference
  • Do not reference
  • Introductory type sentences in which you present
a stance, opinion or claim that is to be
immediately explored (in the next sentence) with
    scholarly references.
  • Sentences where you are making connections
between pieces of theory or connecting the theory
    to the case study.
  • When making concluding statements or deductions
after presenting pieces of referenced writing.
  • Information of a general nature such as facts
which are common knowledge for example historical
dates. BUT, you MUST reference statistics eg
    population

46
Access to Referencing Guidelines
  • You can find referencing guides on the USQ
library website This address will take you
    straight to it
  • http//www.usq.edu.au/library/help/ehelp/ref_guide
    s/default.htm
  • Otherwise, you get to them via the USQ website

How to reference the Study Book
  • In text paraphrase
  • The employment relationship consists of a number
of components, the three main components being
economic, legal and psychological (USQ 2007).
  • According to USQ (2007) the employment
relationship consists of a number of components,

employed by an organisation, an employment
relationship comes into being (USQ 2007 p. 1.3).

Direct quotes require a page number!
50
How to reference the Study Book back to the
Reference List
  • Abbreviations such as USQ may be used in textual
references.  The abbreviation should then be used
for all in-text citations of that body and the
reference list should provide a cross-reference
    by listing the full terminology.

51
How to reference a reading from the selected
readings
(1) the original article
  • In the List of references
  • Nankervis, A, Compton, R, Baird, M 2002,
Human resource planning, in Strategic Human
    resource Management, 4th edn, Nelson/Thomson

    2007, University of Southern Queensland,
    Toowoomba, Reading 2.1, pp. 78-85.

(2) The book of readings
52
How to reference a reading from the selected
readings
  • In Text
  • Nankervis, Compton Baird (2002 p. 80 in USQ
2006) state that HRP systematically forecasts an
organisations future demand for, and supply of,
    employees.

The in text citation acknowledges the original
source of the material
53
How to reference the case study
  • You do not need to
  • provide any intext referencing when you refer to
    the Designer Restaurant case study.
  • You do not need to include the introductory book
(the source of the case study) in your list of
    references.

54
How to reference lecture notes/slides
  • Its simple
  • Dont use them in your formal academic essays as
    an expert source.
  • Lecture slides are simply a transferral of
information (some of it based on the lecturers
    experiences) on the course objectives.

55
  • Good luck with your assignments
