Case finding strategies
  • This section should describe the case finding
strategies for enrolling patients in the cohort
    addressing the following items
  • Define the stage at which the patient receive DST
  • Establish the criteria for inclusion/exclusion in
    the cohort
  • Define the health care institutions in charge of
    patients enrollment

4
1 DST and diagnosis of MDR-TB
  • Perform a DST for each suspected cases of MDR-TB,
specifying if for both first and second-line
    drugs
  • Assess the time when the TB patient will receive
his/her first Drug susceptibility test (DST) for
diagnosis of MDR-TB (I.e.within one month after
being declared failures with CATII regimen or
    after failure to CATI)

5
2 Criteria for enrollment
  • Define the type of cohort of patients to be
    enrolled (I.e. retrospective, prospective)
  • Clearly state both Inclusion and exclusion
    criteria

6
Examples of inclusion criteria
  • Patients with with MDR-TB confirmed by a DST and
    smear positive
  • Patients with with MDR-TB confirmed by a DST
    smear negative but culture positive
  • Patients who have failed category II culture
positive with a DST showing MDR-TB

7
Examples of exclusion criteria
  • Medical conditions preventing use of second-line
    drugs (I.e.liver or renal impairment)
  • Patient not compliant with hospitalization or
    long term DOT
  • Lack of effective drugs (on the basis of second
    line drugs DST)
  • Pregnancy (unless informed consent given)
  • Age (unless informed consent given)

8
3 Define responsibilities
  • Remember to clarify and list the institutions and
the staff in charge of the enrollment, management
    and follow-up of MDR-TB patients
