Fractions

2
  • Students will be able to identify various forms
of fractions along with addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division of those fractions.

3
  • The types of fractions that students will be
    learning are proper, improper, vulgar,
reciprocal, mixed numbers, and decimal fractions.

4
  • Students will be able to simplify and convert
    fractions, identify common fractions, know
equivalent fractions and fractions of quantities.

5
  • Students will also learn about Greatest Common
Factor (GCF) and Least Common Multiple (LCM).

6
  • Students would have previous experience with
    addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division in general, and may or may not have some
    previous experience with fractions.

7
  • If students have previous experience with
fractions, I will review what they already know
then teach them new material on fractions.

8
  • I will tell students they would be learning
fractions during the week and would try to make
it seem more interesting by giving examples of
fractions in topics they can relate to.

9
  • I would explain to them that fractions not only
play an important role in mathematics, but also
    in everyday life.

10
I will give students definitions and examples of
each type of fraction that they will be learning
these will be given by using the definitions and
examples provided at www.bymath.com (or any
website that has sufficient definitions and
examples). I will then answer questions and
simplify definitions that they may be unsure
about. I will also give students more examples
of fractions if needed.
11
  • Students will practice using fractions by
completing exercises and playing games at the
    following websites nlvm.usu.edu,
    www.learningbox.com, www.alfy.com.

12
Students will practice fractions and play
fraction games on these websites to become
familiar with similar material that will be on
the quizzes and exam.
13
  • While students are playing the fraction games and
working on the fraction exercises at the various
websites on the computer, I will walk around and
see how they are doing. I will watch each
student individually for a couple of minutes and
tell them how they are doing and give them advice
    on doing better whenever possible.

14
  • Students will complete fraction worksheets for
homework and I will collect them the next day and
give them a grade for how they did. Again, I
will let them know how well they are doing, and
give them reassurance if they arent doing so
well and give them advice on how to improve if
    needed.

15
  • To show students understanding of fractions,
students will complete fraction worksheets found
at jamit.com. Students will hand in the
worksheets the following day and I will correct
them and return them with feedback on them.

16
  • Before they leave school for the day (everyday) I
will ask each student to give me an example of a
different fraction before they leave so they can
review for the test and show me that they
    understand the material.

17
  • Students will take a short 2-3 question quiz
after each section on fractions (which could be
every day or every couple of days) make sure they
    are understanding the material.

18
  • At the end of the week, I would give them an exam
on fractions (maybe 25 questions) to sum up the
unit before we move on to other material.
