Title: SYNOVIAL JOINTS

1
SYNOVIAL JOINTS
  • YEAR 10 GCSE

2
Lesson Objectives
  • You will know five different synovial joints.
  • You will be able to identify where in the body
    these synovial joints are.
  • You will understand how these joints help our
    body to move.
  • You will be able to identify synovial joints on a
    sports person.

3
CONDYLOID JOINT
  • Movement is possible in two planes.
  • The rounded end of one bone fits into the hollow
    of another.
  • Movement is back and forward and side- to side.
  • Ligaments prevent rotation.
  • Example wrist

4
PIVOT JOINT
  • Only rotation is possible because it has a ring
    on a peg structure.
  • Example between the atlas and axis vertebrae in
    the neck.

5
HINGE JOINT
  • Movement in one plane only.
  • Will open until it is straight.
  • Movement is limited because of the shape of the
bones and the position of the ligaments.
  • Example elbow.

6
BALL SOCKET JOINT
  • Moves freely in all directions.
  • Ligaments are often used to keep the joint
    stable.
  • Examples hip shoulder.

7
GLIDING JOINT
  • One bone slides on top of another.
  • A little movement is possible in all directions.
  • Ligaments limit the movement.
  • Example Carpal Bones (hand).

8
Your Task
  • Label the 5 synovial joints neatly onto the
sports person with a full description. Use page
    19 to help you!
  • Add the range of movement the joint allows. Use
the table on page 20 to help you!
  • eg hinge flexion extension.

9
Muscular System
  • Complete Muscle Sheet (Page 23).
  • Add different colours to make different muscles
    stand out.
  • Revise muscles for short test at the start of
    next lesson.
