Title: SCBA

1
SCBA
Annual Training As required by OSHA Regulation 29
CFR 1910.134 (K)
2
1910.134 (k)
  • Training and information. This paragraph requires
the employer to provide effective training to
employees who are required to use respirators.
    The training must be comprehensive,
understandable, and recur annually, and more
    often if necessary.

3
Necessity of SCBA
  • Protection from Respiratory Hazards
  • Face/Eye Protection
  • Part of Encapsulation Protection

5
Heat or Elevated Temperatures
Heat can damage the respiratory tract, and if the
air is moist, the damage can be worse. Excessive
heat taken in to quickly can cause a serious
decrease in BP failure of the circulatory
system. Inhaling heated gases can cause Pulmonary
Edema, which can cause death from asphyxiation.
6
Smoke
The smoke at a fire is a suspension of small
particles of carbon, tar, dust floating in a
combination of heated gases. The particles
provide a means for the condensation of some of
the gaseous products of combustion especially
aldehydes organic acids formed from
carbon. Some particles are merely irritating
others are lethal.

Limitations of SCBA
  • Limited Visibility
  • Decreased Communication
  • Increased Weight - causing fatigue
  • Decreased Mobility
  • Limited Air Supply
  • Cannot protect against certain toxins absorbed
    through skin

11
Limitations of Wearer
  • Physical Fitness of Firefighter.
  • Degree of exertion of firefighter
  • Emotional Stability of firefighter
  • Condition of BA
  • Training Experience of firefighter

12
Limitations of Wearer
  • Other Physical Requirements of the wearer.
  • Facial Hair extending into the sealing area.
  • Wearing items that interfere with seal
  • Temple pieces on glasses
  • Nomex hoods should be worn outside of Facepiece.
  • Absence of dentures.

13
Capabilities of SCBA
  • Protection from Respiratory Hazards as
    encountered at
  • Fire Attack Responses- Structural, Vehicle, etc.
  • Carbon Monoxide Responses
  • Confined Space Rescue
  • Below Ground Level
  • Hazardous Materials Responses
  • Any Environment that is suspected to be hazardous
    or oxygen deficient
  • Protection for Face and Eyes
  • From Flying/Falling Objects
  • From Heat

14
Safety Features of SCBA
  • Low Air Alarm - Vibralert
  • Emergency By-Pass Valve
  • Safety Device with Rupture Disk
  • Pressure Relief Valve
  • Gauges (Remote Bottle)
  • Positive Pressure
  • Shatter resistant Lens in Facepiece

15
Emergency Situations
  • Regulator Malfunction
  • Use Purge Valve to bypass Regulator.
  • Reduce flow by gating cylinder valve.
  • Pressure Reducer Malfunction
  • Reduce flow by gating cylinder valve.

EXIT BUILDING AT FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE!
16
Maintenance
  • Preventative maintenance is being performed on
all packs once every 6 months. One truck is done
monthly on a rotating schedule. E-1 January, E-2
    February, E-3 March... etc.
  • All other maintenance requests should be sent to
Fire HQ on the correct form and with the Air-Pak
    and mask needing repair.

Cleaning Disinfecting
  • Mask
  • Clean with Soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly.
    If heavily soiled.
  • To disinfect use Scott Multi-Wash, then rinse.
  • Regulator
  • Clean regulator body by wiping down with soap
    water. Do not submerge.
  • To disinfect use Scott Multi-Wash.

21
Storing
  • Store the SCBA on the truck as a complete unit.
If components are wet make sure they are left so
they can dry to avoid mildew.
  • DO NOT store with head net pushed in front of
    mask.
  • Be careful as to how the low pressure hose is
placed in bag. No extreme bends.

22
Special Problems
  • Low Temperatures
  • High Temperatures
  • Rapid Temperature Changes
  • Communications
  • Confined Spaces
  • Vision
  • Facepiece-to-Face Sealing Problems

23
Special Problems
  • Absorption through or irritation of the skin
  • Effects of Ionizing Radiation on the skin and
    entire body
  • Punctured or Ruptured Eardrums
