  • Equipment
  • Padded board, footrest, straps.
  • Protractor, Crank

Physiologic effects
  • Increased circ. In upright position
  • Increased urinary drainage
  • Musculoskeletal muscle tone increases in
    antigravity m. Increased pull on longbones
  • Neurologic Sensory receptors of the soles of
    the feet, Joint proprioceptors, m spindles,
    semicircular canals
  • Motor Alpha mn are stim in antigravity m
  • Respitory increased ventilation, gravity drains
    bronchioles

Advantages
  • Safe, upright position, amt. Of weight borne is
    controlled. Pt cooperation is not necessary

Disadvantages
  • Cumbersome.
  • Fainting
  • LE edema
  • Supine may aggravate sacral decubiti
  • Time consuming

Indications
  • Orthostatic hypotension/ Postural hypotension
    drop of 10-20mmHg in response to upright
    position.
  • Pt.s requiring Postural drainage
  • Post fracture, CVA, MS,Para or Quad, amputee, CP
    MD, Bronchitis CF.
  • Any situation where you need to slowly elevate
    fully or partially

Contraindications
  • Acute spinal or pelvic fractures, acute
    lumbosacral sprain, acute cardiac infarctions.
  • Any patient that can stand on their own

Procedure
  • Explain to pt.
  • Pt will report dizzyness, nausea, lightheadedness
  • Purpose

Position Equipment
  • Position binder right side down at table center
  • Check that table is locked and flat

Position Pt
  • 1. Transfer pt.
  • 2. Secure abdominal binder
  • 3. Secure strap above knees
  • 4. Secure strap below breast
  • 5. Resting BP and Pulse

Raising and Lowering the Patient
  • 1. Slowly elevate to 20
  • 2. Take BP/HR
  • 3. Elevate the pt. To 45- repeat vitals
  • 4. Elevate the pt. To 85-repeat vitals
  • 5. Lower in three stages
  • 6. Check vitals at each stage
  • 7. Check pt. Every five minutes until resting
    vitals are achieved

Precautions
  • Make sure the straps are tight enough
  • Feet must be flat
  • Signs of excessive sweating, fainting and nausea
    mean lower the pt. Or stay with the pt.
