Title: In your table of contents

1
In your table of contents
  • Add Earth and Moon Notes

2
Earth
  • Earth is the water planet, which is the reason
for the survival of life on this planet.
  • Temperatures on Earth are warm enough to keep the
water from freezing but cool enough to keep it
    from boiling away.

3
The Earths Interior Three Layers
  1. The crust is the outer layer of the Earth.
  2. The mantle lies below the crust. It contains
    denser rocks.
  3. The core, at the center, contains the heaviest
    material (nickel and iron).

The Earth from Space
  • NASA has a program to study Earth using
    satellites.
  • The goal of this project, called the Earth
Science Enterprise, is to study the Earth as a
system and to determine the effects humans have
    in changing the global environment.
  • Studying Earth will help us better understand how
    weather, climate, and pollution interact.

Earths Orbit

Earth Statistics
  • Distance from sun
  • Period of rotation
  • Period of revolution
  • Diameter
  • Surface temperature
  • Surface gravity
  • 8.3 light-minutes
  • 23 hours, 56 minutes (24)
  • 365 days, 6 hours
  • 12,756 km
  • -13C to 37C
  • 100 of Earths

9
BellWork
  • How is Earth different from all other planets?
  • Name some characteristics and facts about our
    moon.

10
Luna The Moon of Earth
  • Satellites are natural or artificial bodies that
revolve around larger bodies like planets.
  • Except for Mercury and Venus, all of the planets
    have natural satellites called moons.
  • The moons orbit is tilted.

11
The Surface of the Moon
  • Lunas density is much less than Earths.
  • According to lunar rock samples brought back by
Apollo astronauts, the composition of the moon is
similar to that of the Earths mantle.
  • Numerous craters are on the moons surface.
  • The large dark areas on the moon are lava plains
    called maria.

12
Moon Statistics
  • Period of rotation
  • Period of revolution
  • Diameter
  • Surface temperature
  • Surface gravity
  • 27 days, 8 hours
  • 27 days, 8 hours
  • 3,476 km
  • -170 to 134C
  • 17 of Earths

13
Bell work 1/10/11
  • What is Earths nickname?
  • What are the three layers of Earths interior?
  • What is special about Lunas orbit?
  • What are the four inner planets, starting at the
    sun?

14
Eclipses
  • An eclipse occurs when the shadow of one
    celestial body falls on another.
  • A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes
between the sun and the moon
  • A solar eclipse happens when the moon comes
between the Earth and the sun, and the shadow of
the moon falls on part of Earth.

15
Solar Eclipses
  • The moon in the sky appears to be nearly the same
    size as the sun.
  • So during a solar eclipse, the disk of the moon
almost always covers the disk of the sun.

16
Solar Eclipse
  • This is an image of the suns corona during the
February 26, 1998 eclipse in the Caribbean.
  • The solar corona is visible only when the entire
disk of the sun is blocked by the moon.

17
Lunar Eclipses
  • Earths atmosphere acts like a lens and bends
some of the sunlight into the Earths shadow, and
the interaction of the sunlight with the
molecules in the atmosphere filters out the blue
    light.
  • With the blue part of the light removed, most of
the remaining light that illuminates the moon is
    red.
