MOTIVATOR
  • A soldier was doing his morning police call.
    He fell and hit his shoulder on the ground. You
    are the first on the scene. What are you going to
    do ?

TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVE
  • ACTION- Apply a sling and swathe to a casualty
  • CONDITION- Given a simulated conscious casualty
    and two cravats in a classroom setting
  • STANDARD- Apply cravat in a timely manner without
    causing further injury to the casualty in
    accordance with FM 21-10

EVALUATION
  • There will have a brief performance evaluation on
    the collective task you will learn.
  • You have to perform all steps in order and
    correctly to get a Go.

  • For the next 10 minutes I will briefly cover
    recognizing a possible dislocation or fracture of
    a shoulder
  • How to apply a sling
  • How to apply a swathe

LEARNING STEPS
  • Is the scene safe
  • Mechanism of injury
  • Check for any life threatening injuries
  • Check for any circulation
  • Check for any deformities
  • Never try to realign suspected dislocation or
    fracture
  • Get brief history on what happened

  • Q. What is the first thing we check when we come
    up to the scene?
  • A. For scene safety.
  • Q. What must we never do?
  • A. Must never try to realign dislocation or
    fracture of shoulder.

  • Apply sling to a suspected dislocation or
    fracture with out causing further injury

LEARNING STEPS
  • Remove cravat from wrapper and fold out
  • Tie a pigs tale at short end of cravat
  • Slide one side of cravat under injured side with
    two long ends pointing toward wrist and pig tale
    end toward elbow
  • Bring two long ends up toward uninjured side on
    neck side and tie non slip knot
  • Make sure arm is at a 90 degree angle

  • Q. What side of the neck do you tie the knot?
  • The uninjured side.
  • Q. What kind of knot do you tie the cravat in?
  • In a non-slip knot.
  • Q. What angle should the shoulder be positioned
    in when resting in the cravat?
  • A. In a 90 degree angle.

  • Apply a swathe to a suspected dislocation or
    fractured shoulder.

LEARNING STEPS
  • Unfold the second cravat into two half
  • Make sure the width is 6 to 8 inches
  • Wrap the cravat around mid arm securing arm as
    close as possible to body
  • Tie two ends on non-injured side
  • Transport to medical facility

  • Q. How many inches wide should the swathe be?
  • 6 to 8 inches wide.
  • Q. Where should the non-slip knot be tied?
  • A. Should be tied on uninjured side.
  • Q. What is the last step?
  • A. Transport casualty.

  • You will now be tested on your ability to
    perform apply a sling and swathe to a casualty.
