Central Nervous System

• One of several control and regulation systems in
  the body
• Collects and integrates input from various
  sensors (external and internal)
• Regulates functions concerning motor activities
  from the cerebellum, cerebrum, and spinal cord
• The two-way pathways are neurons

Organization of Nervous System

• Functional Organization
• Autonomic (visceral)
• fright, flight, or fight
• Involuntary functions (cardiac, smooth muscle,
  blood flow, digestion, glucose release in liver)
• Subdivided into sympathetic and parasympathetic
  subsystems (controlling HR, unconscious actions)
• Somatic
• Regulates mental activities, skeletal muscle,
  conscious actions

• Controls voluntary movements, sensory experience,
  abstract thought, memory, learning, consciousness
• Cerebellum (part of hind-brain)
• Distributes and integrates impulses from cerebral
  centers to motor neurons in spinal cord
• Brain Stem (controls vital organs heart, lungs)
• Spinal Cord

Spinal Cord

• Extension of the brain
• Nerve pairs emanate from spinal cord
• 12 pairs of cranial nerves
• 31 pairs of spinal nerves
• Roots emanate between vertebrae
• These nerves serve defined sectors in the body
  (dermatomes)
• Serve as both sensory (afferent) and motor
  (efferent) pathways
