All Along The Watchtower
"There must be some way out of here," said the
joker to the thief, "There's too much confusion,
I can't get no relief. Businessmen, they drink my
wine, plowmen dig my earth, None of them along
the line know what any of it is worth." "No
reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly
spoke, "There are many here among us who feel
that life is but a joke. But you and I, we've
been through that, and this is not our fate, So
let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting
late." All along the watchtower, princes kept
the view While all the women came and went,
barefoot servants, too. Outside in the distance a
wildcat did growl, Two riders were approaching,
the wind began to howl.

Hurricane
Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night Enter
Patty Valentine from the upper hall. She sees the
bartender in a pool of blood, Cries out, "My God,
they killed them all!" Here comes the story of
the Hurricane, The man the authorities came to
blame For somethin' that he never done. Put in a
prison cell, but one time he could-a been The
champion of the world. Three bodies lyin' there
does Patty see And another man named Bello,
movin' around mysteriously. "I didn't do it," he
says, and he throws up his hands "I was only
robbin' the register, I hope you understand. I
saw them leavin'," he says, and he stops "One of
us had better call up the cops."
12
Subterrain Homesick Blues
Johnny's in the basement Mixing up the
medicine I'm on the pavement Thinking about the
government The man in the trench coat Badge out,
laid off Says he's got a bad cough Wants to get
it paid off Look out kid It's somethin' you
did God knows when But you're doin' it again You
better duck down the alley way Lookin' for a new
friend The man in the coon-skin cap In the big
pen Wants eleven dollar bills You only got
ten Maggie comes fleet foot Face full of black
soot Talkin' that the heat put Plants in the bed
but The phone's tapped anyway Maggie says that
many say They must bust in early May Orders from
the D. A. Look out kid Don't matter what you
did Walk on your tip toes Don't try "No
Doz" Better stay away from those That carry
around a fire hose Keep a clean nose Watch the
plain clothes You don't need a weather man To
know which way the wind blows
13
Blowin In The Wind
How many roads must a man walk down Before you
call him a man? Yes, 'n' how many seas must a
white dove sail Before she sleeps in the
sand? Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon
balls fly Before they're forever banned? The
answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The
answer is blowin' in the wind. How many times
must a man look up Before he can see the
sky? Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man
have Before he can hear people cry? Yes, 'n' how
many deaths will it take till he knows That too
many people have died? The answer, my friend, is
blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the
wind. How many years can a mountain exist Before
it's washed to the sea? Yes, 'n' how many years
can some people exist Before they're allowed to
be free? Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn
his head, Pretending he just doesn't see? The
answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The
answer is blowin' in the wind.

Analyzing Blowin In The Wind
  • Asking questions of how and when we will stop
fighting and realize that these wars are getting
    us nowhere
  • He talks about the answer blowing in the wind.
By this we think he means that the answer is
right in front of us so it just gets overlooked.
Like air, we need it to survive, but it is often
    not thought of that way.

Knockin On Heavens Door
Mama, take this badge off of me I can't use it
anymore. It's gettin' dark, too dark for me to
see I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's
door. Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's
door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's
door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's
door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's
door Mama, put my guns in the ground I can't
shoot them anymore. That long black cloud is
comin' down I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's
door. Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's
door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's
door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's
door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
16
Analyzing Knockin On Havens Door
  • Written about the anti war movement that was
    going on at the time.
  • It talks about solders not wanting to help fight
for their country anymore. They are tired of not
seeing their families and they just want to go
home. You can see this all throughout the lyrics
when the solder is saying all the things he cant
    do anymore.

Like A Rollin Stone
Once upon a time you dressed so fine You threw
the bums a dime in your prime, didn't
you? People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're
bound to fall" You thought they were all kiddin'
you You used to laugh about Everybody that was
hangin' out Now you don't talk so loud Now you
don't seem so proud About having to be scrounging
for your next meal. How does it feel How does it
feel To be without a home Like a complete
unknown Like a rolling stone? You've gone to the
finest school all right, Miss Lonely But you know
you only used to get juiced in it And nobody has
ever taught you how to live on the street And now
you find out you're gonna have to get used to
it You said you'd never compromise With the
mystery tramp, but now you realize He's not
selling any alibis As you stare into the vacuum
of his eyes And ask him do you want to make a
deal?
18
Cont.
How does it feel How does it feel To be on your
own With no direction home Like a complete
unknown Like a rolling stone? You never turned
around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the
clowns When they all come down and did tricks for
you You never understood that it ain't no
good You shouldn't let other people get your
kicks for you You used to ride on the chrome
horse with your diplomat Who carried on his
shoulder a Siamese cat Ain't it hard when you
discover that He really wasn't where it's
at After he took from you everything he could
steal. How does it feel How does it feel To be
on your own With no direction home Like a
complete unknown Like a rolling stone?
19
Cont.
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty
people They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got
it made Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts
and things But you'd better lift your diamond
ring, you'd better pawn it babe You used to be so
amused At Napoleon in rags and the language that
he used Go to him now, he calls you, you can't
refuse When you got nothing, you got nothing to
lose You're invisible now, you got no secrets to
conceal. How does it feel How does it feel To be
on your own With no direction home Like a
complete unknown Like a rolling stone?
