FEMINIST ART
  • Background and Quick Facts
  • Feminist art began in the 1960s and flourished
    throughout the 1970s .
  • Feminist Art has been called "the most
influential international movement of any during
the postwar period" 1 and its effects continue
    to the present.
  • Feminist art also attempts to change the
foundation for the production and reception of
    contemporary art.

Linda Nochlin, for example, read Black Iris III
as a "morphological metaphor" for female
genitalia, insisting that the connection is
"immediate", "concrete", and "that the two
meanings are almost interchangeable." In this
merger of botany and anatomy, Nochlin found
reflection of "the unity of the feminine and the
natural order"

Krugers work merges found photographs from
existing sources with aggressive text that
addresses the struggle for power and control. Her
trademark slogans question notions of feminism,
consumerism, individual autonomy and desire.
Interestingly enough her black-and-white images
are appropriated from the mainstream magazines
that sell the very ideas she questions!
