- Today the elements of a building are

dictate that the disciplines of architecture,
engineering, and design are seamless. Such is the
BDP ambition and approach. - Peter Drummond

84Thoughts on International Work
85BDP. International Strategy
The Challenge
- To transform BDP from being a national to an
international design organisation whilst
retaining the core values
86BDP. International Strategy
To be achieved through
- Expanding the amount of international work being
carried out within the existing offices. - Opening up new offices abroad
87BDP. International Strategy
Timescale
- International expansion in a long term strategy
which may take 20 years to achieve - However short term commercial pressures (e.g.
recession, pension fund issues etc.) may come
into play - Rapid growth could compromise design and
technical quality. Leadership Stretch could
also be an issue.
88BDP. International Strategy
89Extending the network of locations Three options
- Starting from scratch
- Seedcorn workload essential
- Lengthy process
- Local / BDP cultural balance should be
- possible
- Acquisition of existing small practice
- Complementary cultures which can fuse is
- essential
- Accelerated process
- Local knowledge and contacts will be
- invaluable
- 3. Merger with medium/ large practice
- Fundamental similarity of cultures is essential
- Provides dramatic change
- Merger process likely to require extensive
negotiation
Whichever route is adopted, the whole must end up
as greater than the sum of the parts.
BDP. International Strategy
90Extending the network of locations 7 key criteria
- Access to New Markets
- Will it become possible to win otherwise
unobtainable quality work? - Does work available suit BDP sectors and is there
an opportunity to break into new sectors/
building types? - Does the new location provide access to a wider
region?
BDP. International Strategy
91Extending the network of locations 7 key criteria
- 2. Strength of the Economy
- How vibrant is the local economy at the present
time? - Establishing a new office will take time is the
economy predicted to grow? - Is the local economy likely to follow the UK or
be complementary to it?
BDP. International Strategy
92Extending the network of locations 7 key criteria
- 3. Level of Fees Available
- How do fee levels paid locally compare to the UK/
Western Europe? - If fee levels are lower, can a local office be
viable? - What are the possibilities for work sharing/
outsourcing between offices?
BDP. International Strategy
93Extending the network of locations 7 key criteria
- 4. Availability of Design Resource
- Is there a strong local design culture which
makes the location attractive to the best young
designers? - Are there good local schools of architecture and
engineering? - What other architectural, design and engineering
practices are represented?
BDP. International Strategy
94Extending the network of locations 7 key criteria
- 5. Cultural Fusion
- Will it be possible to establish a strong office
identity which fuses BDP and local culture? - To what extent are corrupt practices a part of
local business culture? - Does the political system give rise to ethical
issues for BDP?
BDP. International Strategy
95Extending the network of locations 7 key criteria
- 6. Empathy / Familiarity
- To what degree does the legislative system have
compatibility with the UK? - Will language be an issue?
- Are there likely to be financial issues related
to currency, the movement of cash or local tax
regimes?
BDP. International Strategy
96Extending the network of locations 7 key criteria
- 7. International Cachet
- Is this a location where having a BDP presence
will increase standing and reputation? - Will a presence in this location assist access
into influential networks? - Does a presence here provide access to
information and opinion which will enable BDP to
be at the forefront of design thinking?
BDP. International Strategy
97Future Trends
- The BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and
China) have increased their share of global GDP
from 15 in 1980 to 25 in 2007 overtaking the
USA (22). - By 2032, the BRIC economies will overtake the G7.
- 4 of the worlds richest people are Indian.
- There are 62 BRIC based companies in the Global
500. - A massive domestic middle class is becoming
established in each of the BRIC countries.
