Industrial By-Products What are They?

• Many industries produce residual materials that
  may
• be used beneficially
• be disposed of if not used
• require some form of processing
• need no processing
• Products, or by-products or co-products or waste
  streams or .?

By Product An Example

• The utility industry makes electricity
• Coal fueled power plants produce about 50 of US
  electricity needs
• Combustion of coal creates by-products
• Fly ash, bottom ash, boiler slag
• Emission control systems may produce other
  materials synthetic gypsum, flue gas
  desulphurization materials

Uses for Coal Ash

• Coal combustion products (because they
  generally need no further processing)
• Fly ash as a substitute for portland cement
• Synthetic gypsum for agriculture and wall board
  production
• Boiler slag for shingles, abrasives, ice control
• Bottom ash for replacement of sands and as raw
  feed for cement production

Other Industries are Similar

• Spent foundry sands can be used for structural
  fills and embankments, pavement base, hot mix
  asphalt, potting soils and other uses.
• Paper industry by-products can be used for
  organic amendments to soil, industrial
  absorbents, compost feedstock, glass aggregate
  and construction uses.

More Industrial Materials

• Scrap tires are used in asphalt, as playground
  cover, fuel for cement kilns and in other
  construction opportunities.

• Iron and steel slag is used as aggregate, in
  concrete and masonry products, in water
  treatment systems and as cement kiln raw feed.

All These Materials Face Similar Issues

• Non-hazardous materials
• Typically regulated as industrial or solid waste
• Are by-product streams that cannot be reduced to
  zero
• Are included in EPA action plans for 2005
• Offer many economic, technical and environmental
  opportunities

• Promotes variety of uses for materials

• Provides measurable environmental outcomes

Recycled Materials

• EPAs current focus is on coal combustion
  products, foundry sands and construction and
  demolition debris others may follow
• EPA OSW and FHWA have supported use of these
  materials for many years
• Public/private sector outreach
• Publications
• Workshops

• Partnerships can help promote these and other
  materials in positive ways.
• Information exchange and resolution of technical
  questions opens the doors to beneficial reuse
• Industry and agencies working together can help
  identify actual or perceived barriers.

• Perception often the most serious issue
• Arent these hazardous?
