Title: Welcome to Chinese Class! HUANyinG ??!

1
Welcome to Chinese Class!HUANyinG ??!
Dr. Waltz ??? Cai laoSHI
2
Procedures
  • Chinese students succeed because they always know
what to do. They know the right procedure.
  • Chinese is a fun language, but there is a lot to
learn. We will do things step-by-step to make it
    easy for everyone.
  • We will all have less stress because we will
always know what we need to do.

3
When You Follow Procedures
  • I will acknowledge you verbally in class.
  • The atmosphere in our class will be relaxed and
    productive.
  • We will learn more Chinese and learn it faster
    and more easily.

4
When You Dont Follow Procedures
  • We waste class time.
  • That means more homework, because you still have
    to learn the same things.
  • That means less time to do things you like in
    class (games, reading, etc.)
  • You make your Dear Teacher Unhappy.
  • I have less energy to teach you well.
  • Not respecting the teacher and your school
reflects badly on your class and your family.

5
When I need your attention
  • I will say, tonGxuEmen! ???!
  • Stop what you are doing, look at me, and answer,
    laoSHI! ??!
  • Listen I will have something to say to you.

6
Practicing Important Things
  • When I teach you something I want you to put in
your own words, I will say, Jiao tonGxuE!
    ???!(Teach your classmate).
  • Students respond, hao! ?!(Okay!)
  • In pairs, tell your partner what I just taught
    you.
  • Switch roles (teacher/student) when I say Huan!
    ? (Switch!)

7
How to Come Into the Room
  • Enter the room quietly
  • Take a KAIshi ?? (Start) handout from the
    pile if appropriate
  • Quietly take your name card from the holder
  • Go to your assigned seat and place your name card
    on your desk.
  • Sit down and begin work on the KAIshi.

8
Doing a KAIshi ??
  • KAIshi exercises can be handouts or could be on
    the board or projector.
  • Get a handout if you need one.
  • Work quietly alone or with your partner.
  • Bare desks except for KAIshi materials and
    pen/pencil.

9
Starting Class
  • I will signal to the Class Leader (BANzhang ??).
  • He or she will stand, face the class and say,
    qiLi! ??! (Stand).
  • Students stand up and look at me.
  • BANzhang leads class in saying laoSHI hao
    ???(Hello, teacher.)
  • I respond, DaJIA hao ??? (Hello, everyone) and
ask you to be seated (qing Zuo ??).
  • Sit down and prepare to start the lesson.

10
If you are late to class
  • Enter the room quietly
  • Pick up a Late Slip and get your Name Card
  • Go to your seat and complete the Late Slip
  • Place the completed Late Slip and your
excuse/pass (if the tardy was excused) in your
    name card holder

11
Paper Headings
  • On each paper for Chinese class, you must write
  • Your English name (first and last names)
  • Your Chinese name (just your last name at first).
  • Your Personal Number.
  • The date in Chinese (example 2008?9?4?) (I will
write this on the board for you at first to help
    you learn it.)

12
Your Partner
  • You will work with your partner to help both of
    you earn an A.
  • Exchange phone numbers or e-mails with your
partner so you can communicate outside of class.
  • I will change partner matchups each month.

13
Partner Responsibilities
  • Help your partner learn better and faster.
  • Pick up a copy of all handouts if your partner is
    absent.
  • Make a copy of the new vocabulary words to give
your partner if she or he is absent.
  • Work on pairwork activities with him or her
    during class.
  • Encourage each other and celebrate your success
    together!

14
If You Miss Class
  • Fill out an Absent slip the day you come back to
class, and put it with your name card when you
    leave class.
  • Your partner will give you any papers you missed
getting and the vocabulary you missed.
  • When you can, visit the class Web site and listen
to anything that is posted to help you catch up.

15
If Your Homework is Not Complete
  • Pick up a Responsibility Slip when you come into
    the classroom
  • Fill it out and sign it
  • Give the slip plus any homework you did finish to
the paIzhang (row leader) when he or she
    collects homework
  • If you did nothing, just turn in the slip
  • Make up the missed homework ASAP

16
If You Finish Early
  • Practice writing characters for the monthly exam
    on writing
  • Get a story or book to read (later in the year I
will have a class library for you)
  • Get a New Word sheet and complete it alone or
with your partner if he or she also finished
    early
  • Quietly review vocabulary with your partner

17
Leaving Class Early
  • If you know you will need to leave early, get an
Early Leave slip when you come in.
  • Fill the slip out and give it to me during
    KAIshi time.
  • When the time comes to leave, quietly gather your
things, put your name card back, and leave the
room. You do not have to ask permission.
  • Check with your partner later to see what you
missed from the remainder of class.

18
Handing In Papers
  • Hold papers with both hands (this is important
it shows respect in Chinese culture).
  • Pass papers to the left, across the row, to the
    paIzhang (row leader).
  • paIzhangs pass stacks of papers forward to the
    BANzhang (class leader).
  • BANzhang places papers in the class folder.

19
In An Emergency
  • Stay quietly in your seat.
  • If we must leave the room, I will tell you to
line up. Line up across the whiteboard in order
of your Personal Number, with the lowest numbers
at the end towards the door.
  • If you are out of class (restroom, etc.) and you
see everyone leaving the building, go to the
nearest teacher. Do not come back to the
    classroom.

20
Class Dismissal
  • I will signal the BANzhang.
  • BANzhang will say, qiLi (Stand up).
  • Students stand.
  • BANzhang leads students to say, XieXie laoSHI
    (thank you, teacher.)
  • I will thank you for a good lesson and say Xia
    Ke (Class Dismissed.)

21
Exit Quizzes
  • Sometimes after class is formally dismissed,
there will be an exit quiz. Dont worry, these
    are not for a grade!
  • You will have to answer a question or say or read
    something to leave the room.
  • If you get the answer wrong, you must go to the
end of the line and try again.
  • Wait quietly and review recent words and stories
    while you wait.
  • Leave the room quietly and go to your locker or
    your next class.
