DEFINITIONS

• Succulents - plants that have tissues specialized
  for the storage of water. Undergo CAM
  photosynthesis
• Hedgehog cacti - low growing in mounds, clustered
  succulent stems, green and spiny.
• Chollas - upright or tree-like, stems are jointed
• Prickly pears - flattened stems with big round
  pad with various arragement of spines.

Cactus Terms

• Aerole round to oval lications of the pad or
  stems of cactus from which the spines arise.
  Often found in regular arrangements, may have a
  felty or wooly appearance

• Central spine a spine that originates at or
  near the center of the areole, usually has a
  larger base than those spines surrounding it and
  often differs length.

• Glochid a tiney, brislte-like barbed spine that
  is readily detached from the plant. Chollas and
  prickly pear have glochids. Upon contact they
  work their way into your skin and because of
  their barbs they are very difficult to remove.

• Joint a segment of the stem of a cactus that is
  usually separated from the adjacent segement by a
  constriction. Chollas and prickly pear have
  joints. Usually each segment represents one
  season growth.

• Ovary the female flower portion that produces
  the fruit and houses the next generation of
  plants, the seeds.

• Pad laterally flattened joint of a prickly pear
  branch.

• Radial Spines spines that originate at or near
  the edge of the areole, outside of the central
  spine. They spread out from the cental spine
  like spokes on a wheel and are often smaller that
  the central spine.

• Tubercule a raise areole, it is nipple like
  from which the spines arise.
