3Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers
- Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers may
require you to combine numbers that are integers,
decimals, and fractions. You may need to convert
to the same form. - Use integer add and subtract rules when needed.
- When you add or subtract fractions you must have
a common denominator. - To add and subtract decimals, be sure the decimal
points are lined up so that the place-values are
also lined up.
4Find the sum.1) -2.304 (-0.26)
- Line up the decimals and use integer add (same
signs) rule. - -2.564
Get a common denominator use integer add
(different signs) rule (subtract, take the sign
of the greater value.
5 Find the difference.
3)
Change subtraction to adding the opposite.
Get a common denominator.
Subtract and keep sign of the larger number.
6 Find the difference.
Change subtraction to adding the opposite.
Get a common denominator and subtract. Take sign
of greater value.
