• also such specific problems as crime, divorce,
  child abuse and substance addiction

• Sociology includes two major social sciences
• Anthropology
• The study of human beings, in particular the
  study of their physical character, evolutionary
  history, racial classification, historical and
  present-day geographic distribution, group
  relationships and cultural history
• Psychology
• The science that deals with mental processes and
  behaviour

What is Sociology?

• Sociology emerged in the early 19th century
• The term sociology was coined by Auguste Comte
  (1798-1857) in 1838.Comte hoped to unify all
  the sciences under sociology. He believed that
  sociology had the potential to improve society
  and to direct human activity, including the other
  sciences.
• However, sociology did not replace the other
  sciences. Rather, it has developed a particular
  niche in the study of social life.
