Title: Europump's Pump Efficiency Program
1Europump's Pump Efficiency Program
- HI Annual Meeting 2012St. Petersburg, Fl
2Remember the Objective
- Save Energy
- Selection of properly sized pump
- Optimum combination of components
- System feedback
3Current EU Approach
- Water Pumps
- Focus on product
- Pump only without drive or VFD
- Legislation in Parliament
- Expected European Official Journal Summer 2012
- Heating Circulators
- Focus on Pump, Motor, VFD and Controls
- Regulation in place
4What is wanted by EU?
- Quantification of Energy Savings
- Intrinsic product property / scale / index
- Energy evaluation / comparison of products
- mandatory thresholds
- Labeling/marking
5EuP Water Pumps Regulation - draft
- Chapter 1Subject matter and scope
- 1. This Regulation establishes ecodesign
requirements for the placing on the
market of rotodynamic water pumps for clean
water duty, including where integrated in other
products. - This Regulation shall not apply to
- (a) water pumps designed specifically for
pumping of clean water with temperatures below
-10C or above 120 C, except as regard to the
information requirements of Annex II, point
2(11) to 2(15) - (b) water pumps designed only for fire-fighting
applications - (c) displacement water pumps
- (d) self-priming water pumps.
6EuP Water Pumps Regulation - draft
ANNEX IIEcodesign requirements for water pumps
1. efficiency requirements (A) From 1 January
2013, water pumps shall have a minimum
efficiency index of MEI 0.10, when measured
according to Annex III. (B) From 1 January 2015,
water pumps shall have a minimum efficiency
index of MEI 0.40, when measured according to
Annex III.
7Future EU Approach
- Pumps
- Extended Product Approach
- Legislation Draft
- Article 7Revision
- The Commission shall review this Regulation in
the light of technological progress and shall
present the result of this review to the
Consultation Forum no later than four years after
its entry into force. The review shall aim at
adopting an extended product approach. .

13What is needed ?
- Load Profile Definition
- Generalized but realistic
- Reference Definition (Base Case)
- Market Figures
14Definitions
- Within EUROPUMP, a methodology and a draft
standard will be developed for the determination
of energy efficiency of pump units - Pump units consisting of pump power drive
system (PDS) are defined as Extended Products - EEI (Energy Efficiency Index) proposed to
quantify energy efficiency of pump units - Activities concerning energy efficiency of pump
units are called EPA (Extended Product Approach) - Mandate in draft legislation of Water Pumps and
new EU ErP work items
15Methodology for EEI
- The proposed methodology to determine EEI of pump
units will comprise two alternative ways - test of the complete pump unit
- calculations based on so-called Semi-Analytical
Models (SAMs)(normally done by the end-supplier
of the complete pump unit) - For application of the 2nd method, two SAMs are
needed - SAM of pumps
- SAM of Power Drive Systems
- Semi-Analytical Model mathematical description
of component characteristics which only needs
limited test data as input to adapt the model to
the real component
16Semi-Analytical Model of pumps
- SAM of pumps is based on hydrodynamic
fundamentals and is adjusted by test data at 3
specified flow rates - These test data can directly be taken from former
tests by the pump manufacturer already mandatory
to quantify the energy efficiency of the pump
itself (EuP) - SAM of pumps delivers rotational speed n and
shaft torque T for pump operating conditions
(specified by defined load profiles and pressure
control curves)

19Pump Load driven by PDS
20What exists ?
- EEI Energy Efficiency Index for Circulators
- EEI for Pumps under preparation
- PDS Classes under preparation
- Market figures for Europe
- Efficiency Standard for pumps
- Legislative mandates to work on EEI
21What we need on standardization for PDS
- Standard(s) should describe test method(s) for
related PDS losses including information on
tolerances / allowable uncertainties - Standard(s) should specify supporting points
withinrelated PDS losses f(T,n)-map suitable
for an interpolation scheme valid within the
range of EEI pump operating points - Standard(s) should clarify the responsibilities
and the procedures to determine and indicate
related PDS losses by motor/frequency inverter
