Unit 1 Topic 5 Coastal Change and Conflict
  • On your A3 sheet What key terms can you remember?

2
Coasts foundation question
  • 1. Name the process that moves material along
    the coastline (1 Mark)
  • 2. Outline the the process of longshore drift.
Use diagrams to help. (2 Marks)

Coastal change and conflicts
  • Typical higher exam question (6Marks)
  • For a named location, explain the costs and
benefits of using hard engineering techniques to
    protect a coastline from erosion.

A answer?
  • In Christchurch Bay, groynes have been built and
used to trap sediment. Although the groynes are
expensive to build it has increased the size of
the beach protecting the cliff. It has also
encouraged residents/business owners to stay in
the area people feel confident that erosion and
flooding had been controlled. Groynes can look
unattractive and will effect the natural
processes. Some environmentalists feel that the
groynes effect natural processes too much as well
as being an ugly form of sea defence.
  • Or
  • In Blackpool a sea wall has been built. Although
the wall was expensive to build it did encourage
development of the seafront as businesses felt
confident that erosion and flooding had been
controlled. Due to the size of the sea wall,
access to the beach can be difficult. Some
Blackpool residents feel that the sea wall has
become an ugly barrier keeping tourists away from
one of the resorts main attractions.

More exam questions
  • Identify a coastal landform (usually a
    photo/sketch pointing to one!)
  • Identify two differences between constructive and
    destructive waves. 2 marks
  • Using named examples, explain the costs of two
different methods of coastal management. 6
    marks
  • Name the method of hard engineering shown at A.
    1 marks
  • Name and describe one process of coastal erosion.
    2 marks

diagram(s) to help your answer. 6 marks
