Position of the earth relative to the sun on the
two equinoxes.
The equinox is the date when the sun's vertical
rays strike at 0o latitude (the equator). On this
day there is equal day and night (12 hours
daylight and 12 hours of night) at all place. The
spring or vernal equinox occurs on about March
21. The autumnal equinox occurs on about
September 23.

Position of the earth relative to the sun on the
two solstices.
The solstice is the time during the winter or
summer when the sun's vertical rays are furthest
from the equator. During the summer solstice,
about June 22, the subsolar point is 23.5o north
latitude (Tropic of Cancer). The winter solstice
occurs on about December 22 with the subsolar
point located at 23.5o south latitude (Tropic of
Capricorn).
