1
Pre-Nicene Christian Reconciliation Italy
2
So-called First Letter of Clement (c. 95-98 CE)
  • 2 Stretch forth your hands to the Almighty God,
beseeching him to have mercy, if you sinned by
    remissness.
  • 7 Let us fix our gaze on Christs blood, and
know how precious his blood is to God, because,
when shed for our salvation, it obtained the
grace of penance (µeta???a?) for the whole
    world.
  • 8 Accordingly, willing that all his beloved
should have their part in repentance (µeta???a?
µetas?e??), he established them by his almighty
    will.

3
  • 481 Let us act quickly to remove this evil
and let us fall down before the Master,
beseeching Him with tears, that he become
merciful and be reconciled to us and reestablish
us in the honored and holy practice of fraternal
    love.
  • 513 It is better for one to confess his sins
than to harden his heart, as the heart of those
who rebelled against Moses, the servant of God
    was hardened.

4
  • 572 to the leaders of the Corinthian revolt
Therefore let those who set up the faction
submit yourselves to the presbyters and learn to
    do penance (pa?de???te e?? µet????a?) Bowing the
knees of your heart, learn to be in subjection,
putting away the assertive and haughty arrogance
of your tongue for it is better for you to be
found among the smallest of the elect of the
flock of Christ than to be highly exalted and
    rejected from his hope.
