  • The hunger games Project

2
Settings.
  • The Hunger games is post-apocalyptic, takes
place in North America, renamed Panem. It takes
place in the future, and North America is divided
into districts, 12 to be exact. District 12 is
the poorest, while district 1 is one of the
    richest.
  • District 12 very poor, coal-mining district.
Katniss and her family live in the poorest part
of the district, the seam. The district is
    surrounded by a sometimes-electrified fence,
dividing them from the woods. The district also
includes the Hob, which is the Black market
where Katniss can earn money selling game.
  • The seam The seam is the poorest area of
district 12, where Katniss and her family live.
The seam lies on the border of district 12, next
to the forest and the unknown area of district
    13. Everything in this area is covered in coal
dust. People who live here also seem to look
similar, with black hair and gray eyes, and olive
    skin.
  • The woods The woods symbolizes freedom and peace
for Katniss, and also for Gale. There are bushes,
wild animals and wild dogs, poisonous snakes,
lakes, rivers, ponds, trees, and much, much more.
Katniss hunts here and sells her game in the hob.
She also sets snares and catches rabbits to eat
    with her family.
  • The hob The hob is the black market in district
12, where people are able to sell banned things,
such as game from the woods, spirits, and other
    illegal items.

3
Settings cont.
  • The train The train is what is taking Katniss
and Peeta to the capitol. On the train, Katniss
and Peeta enjoy food of all sorts, even food
theyve never even heard of. The train moves
very, very fast and there is a slight hum coming
from the engine. They can barely tell the train
is moving. The train moves through out mountain
ranges and Katniss is amazed at the sight.
  • The capitol The capitol is known for its fashion
and food. The capitol is the richest, most
powerful area of Panem. The capitol is basically
the government of Panem. The capitol enforces the
they are in charge by having peacekeepers, harsh
punishments, and over all, the Hunger Games.
  • The Training center The training center is where
all 24 tributes train for the arena and the game.
They have many different stations. A couple are
snare making, plant eating, archery, weight
    lifting, and knife throwing
  • The arena An arena is a large, enclosed, outdoor
area where the Hunger Games are held each year.
Arenas are designed by the game makers, and a
new one is built every year. It could be a forest
or a wasteland. The Game makers plant traps and
ideas into the arena, to entertain the people of
Panem. All arenas have a Cornucopia where the
tributes launch into the arena to begin the
Games. Also all the arenas have force fields
around the arenas that bounces back anything that
hits it. Over the years a few tributes have used
    it as a weapon.

Figurative Language
  • Imagery
  • Imagery
  • "And then I see her, the blood drained from her
face, hands clenched in fists at her sides,
walking with stiff, small steps up toward the
stage, passing me, and I see the back of her
blouse has become untucked and hanges out over
    her skirt.
  • A fox faced girl with sleek red hair ran by.
  • She fastened a small golden bird and attached a
ring on it, making the ring look complete and
    gorgeous.
  • "Birds are settling down for the night, singing
lullabies to their young. Night creatures emerge.
An owl hoots. The faint scent of a skunk cuts
through the smoke. The eyes of some animal peer
at me from the neighboring tree - a possum maybe
    - catching the firelight from the Careers'
    torches.
  • Mashed in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes
the color of rotting squash, he was a hideous
    cat.

Figurative language, cont.
  • Foreshadowing
  • Alliteration
  • When Peeta admits hes had a long-lasting crush
on Katniss, Winning wont work in my case why
ever not? asked Caesar. Because she came here
    with me.
  • When Katniss was in a tree and the career
tributes, including Peeta, found her, Oh, let
her stay up there, its not like shes going
anywhere, well deal with her in the morning.
  • "Right now, it's silent as a stone."

Figurative Language, Cont.
  • Simile
  • Metaphor
  • "Could Gale and I have been eating blackberries
only this morning? It seems like a lifetime ago.
Like a long dream that deteriorated into a
    nightmare.
  • "My legs, arms, torso, underarms, and parts of my
eyebrows have been stripped of the stuff, leaving
me like a plucked bird, ready for roasting."
  • "I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as
    radiant as the sun.

nights when games has to be swapped for lard or
shoelaces or wool, still nights when we go to bed
    with our stomachs growling."
  • "We have to stand for a few minutes in the
doorway of the train while the cameras gobble up
our images, then we're allowed inside and the

Figurative Language, Cont.
  • onomatopoeia
  • onomatopoeia
  • "R-i-i-i-p! I grit my teeth as Venia, a woman
with aqua hair and gold tattoos above her
eyebrows, yanks a strip of fabric from my leg,
tearing out the hair beneath it.
  • I wait for the next Hisssssss, but it doesnt
    come.
  • ""Oh good," I say, immediately taking a huge
bite. The strong fatty cheese tastes just like
the kind Prim makes, the apples are sweet and
    crunchy. "Mm.""

29
PLOT
  • As punishment for a past fight against the
Capitol, where a 13th district was destroyed, one
boy and one girl from each district are selected
by a lottery (the reaping) to participate in the
Hunger Games, an event in where the tributes must
fight to the death in an outdoor arena controlled
by the Capitol, until only one person remains. a
girl from District 12, Katniss, volunteers for
the Hunger Games in place of her younger sister,
Prim. The boy tribute is Peeta Mallark.

The reaping
30
  • Katniss and Peeta are taken to the Capitol, where
their mentor Haymitch instructs them to determine
the strengths and weaknesses of the other
tributes. "Stylists" are given to make each
tribute look their best. Katniss's stylist,
Cinna, is the only person at the Capitol with who
she feels understands. The tributes are displayed
to the Capitol audience in an interview with host
Caesar Flickerman, and have to appeal to the
audience in order to gain "sponsors". During this
time, Peeta reveals his love for Katniss. Katniss
believes this to be a trick to gain sponsors, who
can be critical to survival because they can send
gifts such as food, medicine, and tools to
    tributes during the Games.

PLOT
Katniss and Cinna, her stylist
31
  • While almost half the tributes are killed in the
first day of the Games, Katniss works on her
hunting and survival skills to remain safe and
hidden from the other tributes. A few days into
the games, Katniss gets an alliance with Rue, a
12-year-old girl from District 11 who reminds
Katniss of her sister. In the meantime, Peeta
appears to have joined the tributes from the
richer districts. When he has the chance to kill
Katniss, he instead saves her from the others.
Katniss's alliance with Rue is brought to an end
when Rue is killed by another tribute, who
Katniss kills with an arrow. Katniss sings to Rue
until she dies, and spreads flowers over her body
as a sign of respect for Rue and disgust towards
    the Capitol.

PLOT

32
  • Because of Katniss and Peeta's trick, in the
minds of the audience as Star crossed lovers a
rule change is announced through the Games,
saying that two tributes from the same district
can win the Hunger Games together. Hearing this,
Katniss begins searching for Peeta. She finds
him, wounded and hiding. As she nurses him back
to health, she acts like a girl falling in love
to gain favor with the audience and, gifts from
her sponsors. When the couple remain as the last
two surviving tributes, the Gamemakers change the
rule back in an attempt to force them into a
finale, where one must kill the other to win.

PLOT
Katniss helps nurse Peeta back to health.
33
  • Katniss, knowing that the Gamemakers would rather
have two victors than none, gets poisonous
berries known as "nightlock" from her pouch and
gives some to Peeta. Realizing that Katniss and
Peeta intend to commit suicide, the Gamemakers
announce that both will be the victors of the
    74th Hunger Games.

PLOT
Katniss and Peeta holding the nightlock berries.
34
  • Although she survives in the arena and is
welcomed in the Capitol, Katniss is warned by
Haymitch that she has now become a target after
making the capitol seem undesirable. After, Peeta
is heartbroken when he finds out that Katniss in
the arena was just a part of a trick to earn
sympathy from the audience. Katniss is unsure of
her own feelings and realizes that she is doesnt
want to see the when she and Peeta will go their
    separate ways.

PLOT
Katniss and Peeta as the victors of the 74th
hunger games.
35
Conflict
  • Man vs. man
  • Man vs. Nature
  • Katniss Battles
  • Forest fires
  • Tracker jackers
  • Lack of food
  • Dehydration
  • Injuries
  • Disease
  • Predators
  • Katniss Battles
  • The Capitol
  • The Career tributes
  • President snow
  • The main conflict is man vs. man, known as
Katniss against the rest of the 23 tributes. She
fights against most of them in the Hunger Games
    for her life.

36
Conflict
  • Man Vs. Society
  • Man vs. self
  • Katniss Vs. The Capitol.
  • The Capitol controlled all the districts and made
them work while it got to enjoy all of the
luxuries.  The Capitol also controlled The Hunger
Games and sent over a thousand children to kill
each other as tributes while they treated it as
a celebration and they didnt care about the
mass-murder.  Since Katniss was a tribute, she
was disgusted by all of this and tried to defy
the Capitol.  By doing do she started an uprising
    and rebellion of the districts.
  • Katniss vs. Katniss.
  • Katniss fighting with who she is willing to kill
and whom she doesn't want to kill.

37
Theme
  • One of the most important themes in The Hunger
Games is survival, and keeping your humanity and
dignity as you try to survive. Katniss and Peeta
survive the games, but they also survive their
daily lives in the district. The capitol has made
life difficult for those living in the districts,
and to survive the lack of food requires great
strength. Some people in the districts give up,
and others survive but become heartless or
    mentally unstable.

Katniss has to survive her everyday life at home
and in the Hunger Games arena with Peeta
38
Theme, cont.
  • Katniss is a true survivor, she pulls her family
through the tough time after her father's death,
when otherwise they would not have survived.
Peeta tells Katniss that if he dies in the arena,
he wants to do it with his dignity intact. Peeta
says, Even though chances of survival are slim,
I will die as myself, if my humanity and dignity
is in place, I can face death. Peeta is not
going to compromise his humanity, and would
    rather die with dignity.

39
Resolution
  • The resolution The Hunger Games would be when
Katniss and Peeta are the official victors of the
74h hunger games and are getting off the train to
be reunited with their friends and families.

Katniss reunites with her friends and family
40
Mood
  • Throughout the book, Katniss gives off a strong
and confident mood. Her mood is unexpected. The
book its self is suspenseful. The Hunger Games is
a very unique book. It is depressing, joyful,
    surprising, and much, much more.
  • Dangerous
  • Sad
  • dark
  • Serious
