• The pronouns I, you and we are among the
  most frequently used words in the English
  language, especially in spoken English.
• But while I is the most frequently occurring
  pronoun in everyday conversation, we is the
  pronoun used most frequently in business
  interactions.

• In fact, we occurs about twice as often as I
  in business talk.
• The reason is that we can be used in a variety
  of ways in business situations to refer to
  different (groups of) people.

Inclusive we

• This includes both the speaker and the person or
  people being addressed (known as the
  addressees).
• In the example below, it includes everybody who
  is taking part in the meeting

Exclusive we

• This includes the speaker and at least one other
  person, but not the addressee(s). Look at the
  example below from a meeting between a paper
  supplier (Andrew) and one of his customers
  (Peter). When Andrew and Peter uses we, the
  pronoun excludes the other speakers own company.
  This can be seen clearly from the contrast
  between the way that the speakers use we and
  you

Corporate we

• To use we to talk about a company is known as
  the corporate we.
• It is very common in conversations between
  suppliers and customers.
• Below is another example from the same meeting,
  in which Andrew uses we to talk about the
  services that his company is able to offer (next
  page)

• So what were doing is, we run the wheels until
  weve got enough paper made for you. So, we try
  and give you the exact quantity.

• Another important use of we is to create a
  sense of cooperation.
• Here, a manager uses we instead of you,
  although she is explaining a job that a new
  assistant will be doing on her own.
• By using we, the manager gives her assistant
  the feeling that she is part of team (next page)

  she is giving an order.

  sounding too direct
