Title: Film

1
Film
  • Silver-halide crystals photo sensitive (light
    sensitive) materials consisting of metallic
silver in chemical compound with iodine, chlorine
or bromine. When light strikes silver salts,
    causes darkening.
  • Latent Image invisible specks of silver ( a
pattern of ) which become visible due to
development process which causes more silver to
    deposit around latent image specks
  • Density Accumulated silver in an image. High
    density high silver
  • Low density low silver

2
Film
  • Black and White Film Characteristics
  • Sensitivity to light film speed
  • Grain clumps of silver on film
  • Color sensitivity what light wave lengths are
    read
  • Contrast amount of density change
  • Exposure latitude ability of film to
    withstand overexposure and underexposure
  • Color Balance Light varies as do sources of
light. Our brains adjust so that we see normal
or in other words, our brains compensate for the
    variability
  • Format size size of image produced on film.
Can be few millimeters to 4 x 5 or larger.

3
Film
  • Speed of film (light sensitivity) directly
relates to size and of silver halide crystals
    suspended in the emulsion
  • Larger the crystal more sensitive to light
  • Films with larger crystals considered fast
    higher ASA rating
  • Larger crystals larger grain

4
Film
  • Slow films have smaller and more crystals finer
    grain
  • Faster film better for low light situations
  • Faster film can also be better for depth of field
because smaller aperture setting can be utilized
or faster shutter (remember, fast film is more
light sensitive so less exposure time and amount
    required)

5
Film
  • Resolution a films ability to read the minute
differences in value. Slower films tend to have
    better resolution. Higher resolution higher
    clarity correlation)
  • Film Definition distinct edges (No blurring or
blending of edges) Determined by grain and
    resolution
